On my vacation to the north west part of Wisconsin I visited 44 banks asking for halves. Of the 21 banks that had half dollars available, just one bank had one 40% half!! More than half of the banks told me someone came thru and bought all of their halves within the past month. Maybe it was someone who posts here that was one step ahead of me and cleaned out north west Wisconsin.
On a good note-when I came back home my favorite bank had $150 in loose halves for me and I got 1 90% and 14 40% silver half dollars!

Hirbonzig, it's your vacation why use the time banking?
I was in Baltimore a couple months back and walked from bank to bank looking for halves and large dollar coins. Found nothing...
Sometimes you score sometimes you just move clad coins around. It's nice to find anything though and it's probably the variable return that keeps us looking again and again even after 'skunked' boxes.

| My daughter will go with me, and she loves to check the dates for silver ones. She's only 6 and has'nt missed a silver one yet! We will make a day of it with a picnic, playgrounds and alot of time to talk as we drive to the next bank. I did'nt hit all 44 banks in one day-it was over a 2 week period. |

I think it's great that you can share the hobby with your daughter. My dad got me started when I was 6 and those are some of my fondest memories of times shared with him. |

I know we have at least one member up in that neck of the woods, but it could have been anyone. I think more and more people are hearing about this and doing it, even if they are not active members on forums like this.
At least you came back to your regular bank and found a few pieces of silver. :) |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I know of at least 3 members in that neck of the woods. We gotta stop Nickelless from educating the masses. |

^yeah, that sometimes happens when you're going bank hopping. I've had it happen within the same week I visited the bank. But you just gotta keep plugging along.
I've had a phenomenal run of "surprisingly consistent boxes" for months. But out of the last 40 boxes or so, there was only one or two boxes that produced a total of 6 silvers.
Right before those crappy 40 boxes, I was getting some pretty awesome boxes. So if I had to guess, I depleted an old stack in the regional vault, and now I'm pulling a newer set of someone's skunk returns. So I'll keep digging, and hopefully there will be more silver boxes at the bottom of the stack. |

| I picked up my first 2 boxes of halves on Friday. It wasn't a total skunk but it was starting to smell. They only yielded one 90%er and one 40%er. |

| I'm on vacation right now, in beautiful Branson, Missouri. We are going to try to hit every bank around here, but I'm thinking I won't find anything too great. I saw a coin shop right in town; they've probably hit most of the banks before. But, I'll still try, and I'll get back to everyone and report what I found. |

Corsair I think that's a little crazy, but then I also think vacationing in Missouri is a little crazy :P
If you were really outgoing, you'd try and call up the banks before hand and have halfs waiting for you there. OR at least ask if the tellers have recently received halves. Just a thought.

I went to 25 banks. only got about $130 in halves. One had $56.00 and one had $59.00. The rest were either none or 1-2 dollars worth. Got a 90% from a bank that had 3 halves and 18 40% from one that had the $56.00. She said someone emptied out their safe deposit box.
I go to a bank and hear this..." We sold them all yesterday" or "Someone got all of them this morning" How am I a day late or a few hours late to every stinking bank?
Just gotta keep plugging along. |

| I think sometimes they say that because they don't feel like going to the vault, because at some banks it happens all the time. |

I went to a bank yesterday and asked if they had any halves. The teller said she might have some in the back. She asked how many I would want. I said whatever they had. I said, "Oh, and if you could spare two boxes of pennies, or a bag of pennies, that'd be great."
This is a pretty big bank right on the riverfront in downtown Branson. She smiles and goes into the back. She's gone for a few minutes, then five, then ten, and she comes back empty handed. She said, "I'm sorry, but we don't have any." I looked at her and said, "You don't have any pennies?" "No, I'm sorry."
I wouldn't have minded just getting the "We can't sell to non-customers" line, but to make me wait and then lie to my face, which I assume she did, is just ridiculous. |

I agree with you Powerbuck. Some tellers just spat out "NO HALVES!!" and went back to sleep. While others were glad to get rid every last 50 cent piece they had so they did not have to count them at the end of the day. |
