Hi All,

Really enjoy the info gained on this forum! Thanks to everyone who contributes so much helpful information!

My wife and I travel around to lots of different banks and pick up 10-20 rolls at each bank. Being retired this is easy to do and we end up with a lot of rolls after each 'outing'.

We hand sort and I'm confused about the 1982 series. I don't really know how to tell the difference between all the variations of znc and copper and don't have a scale. So what we do is throw all the 82s into a seperate container and then wrap them in rolls. (Sometimes I think I can tell the coppers by 'look' and 'weight', that is how they 'feel' in my hand, but its all just a 'guesstimate' to me .

Anyway, we've been doing this for the last 3 or 4 weeks and have 30+ rolls of all 1982s of all kinds, both P & D. Only ones we don't keep are the 'dirty' culls.

Question: Is it worth it to do this? Should I keep on rolling the 82s? ... is there any market for rolls of mixed 1982s? Or should I dump them and buy more rolls?

One other question: Does it make sense to keep all the 59-81 coppers that are in AU-BU condition separated in rolls? Any market for them?

thanks for any responses anyone cares to give!

From what I have read about 70 percent of 82's are copper. They must have switched over late in the year.

I can hear the difference by dropping them on a wooden table. Even the kitchen counter would work.

Get a 81 or older and a 83 or newer and try. Drop from about 8-12 inches and listen. the zinc will sound dead ( like a thud) the copper will ring.

Small digital scales can be bought for less than 10 bucks on E-bay. You would be surprised at how much you will use it, other than weighing pennies.

Someone was trying to sell some mixed 82's on here once. I was thinking about buying just to see what the percents were, but never did.( other obligations )

As far as the BU's....i'll let someone else tackle that question

Oh yeah...you can make a see-saw..teeter totter...balance beam...whatever you call it with a ruler and a pencil. Put a zinc on one end then add a 82 to the other end. if it drops than it is copper. if not it is zinc.

when you find the difference between the zinc and copper pull all the small date zincs out and look at e pluribus unum for a doubled die. But like slick said the easiest to me is drop them. Some people say they cannot tell the difference but its like night and day with me. and to tell the difference between the small and large the easiest way is to look at the 8. the small will look more like a snowman where the big will look the same on both loops of the 8. and the date is somewhat smaller when you see them side by side. hope i didnt confuse you to much

What everyone else said. A home made balance scale can be made really easily, and really cheap, if not free. You can broom through a batch of pennies in no time.

Of those 30 rolls of '82s you have, about 21-22 of them will be Cu.

I recommend that you save all 82's, and buy a inexpensive scale on eBay. Like slickeast said, you will use it more than you think. I save all noticeably AU/BU coins, and they must have impressive luster so that I can pick them out of my mountains of copper...(Just kidding)

Just want to thank everyone for the excellent advice and comments. I will try the 'homemade' scale route...or get one on eBay. again, thanks (and no 'daviscfad' you didn't confuse me ... just gave me lots of helpful info)!
