Installing some glass block basement windows. Tuff to get through and helps hold in the heat. Consider them in other window areas too.

| Installing 2 glass block windows with vents runs about $350.00. The more you put in, the cheaper the cost becomes. Ardent doesn't have the time to do the work, so he has to have someone do this job. |

Good point. That would be a drawback and should be considered in your fire escape planning. I wouldn't go 100% with glass block for that reason alone, but would consider it for window areas that are more prone to breakins. |

Glass block is extremely good in a garage too.

Just curious, any idea how thick standard glass-block windows are? Are they reinforced around the edges as well in any way that would make them tougher to remove?
There are a couple houses in my neighborhood that have glass-block windows on the outside for their basements, and what I got to thinking is that since these windows appear to be at least somewhat translucent, nobody from the outside would necessarily notice if the windows were reinforced inside by a partial concrete block wall. The window from the outside would look as if it leads into the basement, IF someone can remove the window, but then anyone who removes the window would literally hit a brick wall if they tried to get through the window. Seems like that would be an added deterrent, and granted, I'm just a novice when it comes to constructing anything more complicated than a sandwich, but I wouldn't think it would be especially hard to just "wall off" the window on the inside. |

OK, the past couple weeks I've been talking with a guy who has been trying to sell his house for about the past three years (he listed it right when the market started to tank), and everything about this house seems spot-on what I've been looking for. It was actually built in the late 1800s and it's been kept up very well, but I'm a little worried about the picture window on the front of the house:

The house is in a historic neighborhood and is itself listed in a register of historic places, so external modifications to the structure of the house have to fall within very specific guidelines. But I'm wondering if there's some way to reinforce the picture window and front door from the inside to make it much harder for would-be burglars, etc., to enter. Any ideas?

Nice house.
Not sure on the prices for this, but it looks like it should do the trick: You must be logged in to see this link. -or- Something a little different: You must be logged in to see this link.
Personally I like the first choice better.

I wouldn't worry about it.
If they "would-be burglars, etc.," want to enter they will.
Bust a bedroom window, crowbar a door, get in through a basement window or through a garage door, pick the lock or a multitude of other things.
If "they" want in, "they" will find a way to do it.
Best thing you can do is to spread valuables around and use safes.
Another effective deterrent would be a motion detector that would trigger a loud siren in the attic, alerting the neighbors.
Good neighbors who watch out for one another is key.
If your thinking WTSHTF senario, then all bets are off cause there is nothing stopping them from stealing a car and driving it into your living room.
If you like the house and the neighborhood go for it.
You can play the "what if" game all day.
