I found an OK shape 1943 Lincoln in a Brinks box the other day. That happens never, usually. Chances are we will find steel cents more often then Indians but not as much as Buffalo nickels are found. Do we have a 1943 cent tracker already?

I'm not sure this counts, but I found one steelie last week. Keep in mind that it was taken from 15 dollars or so of CWR that were all 1960's and older. These must have been pennies that were sitting somewhere untouched since the sixties. Anyways here's one more for the tracker if there is one.

I've found 2 in the past 2 weeks, one in fine condition from a brinks box, and the other in AU condition from a CWR. I've only found 3 total since i've been copper hoarding.

My last $500 in boxes from NF String had 78 steel cents total in the $500. I also got about $3.60 in wheats, and about $4 each of 1967 and 1964 in BU condition. Some old lady must have dumped her dead husband's coin jars.

NF String is a company in Harrisburg, PA that handles all the coin for my bank: You must be logged in to see this link.

edit: upon further thinking, perhaps they do not "handle" the coin, but only supply the products to the company that actually does handle the coin. Perhaps the processing company simply purcahses the NF String products and then ships them to the bank... what I do know is that the boxes I get are all marked "NF String" so, I guess anyone could be processing them... just not Brinks

I found one earlier this year, too. When I found it some people said that they might even be more rare than indian head pennies because they stand out. This could be an interesting way to find out, even though I think the Indian head is rarer.

I have not found one yet this year, and it is already half over. I found 8 last year, I didn't start sorting until late March. I was averaging almost 1 a month.

A tracking thread would be cool. We have them for a lot of other things. I like reading them and seeing everyone's finds.

I'm thinking pics should be a must though...

I found a steel penny 2 weeks ago in a Brinks box.

I haven't been keeping records of how many I've found this year, but I believe it's 3 so far for the year. I know one of the other ones also came from a Brinks box and the last one was from CWR.

Yippee!!!

The above is as close as I could come to an "excited" emoticon! Finally a topic I can really participate in with the rest of you.

I found a steel penny just last week in a roll from the bank and it is the sixth one I have found in just under one year of searching rolls of coins. No IHs for me and no wild buffalo either (unless we count the new Bison nickel).

BUT, continuing to have fun looking for these.

Enjoy.

Funny you mention wild buffaloes. I find a good deal of them in the plastic wrapped rolls. I think there must be many wild buffaloes than steel cents in circulation still. No explanation why, just finding that is how it turns out for me. The same with war nickels. People do not discern them from other nickels all that much. Dimes are not so clandestine. The silver edge and fact that many of them probably get rejected in coin sorters flags them out.The elusive wild Indian cent I have found maybe four in the past year and one was from a fed box. The rest were CWRs. I think I have found over 20 wild buffaloes in the past year. Probably more. I do not keep track anymore. I certainly sort more cents than nickels on a coin count basis.

I have found way more steels than the others. In a year and a half of hand sorting I found over 30 steelies, while only 6 indians, and 9 george V's. Nickels wise I have only found two or three buffaloes, and 1 liberty but over 40 War nickels.

Well, I guess it is time for me to eat my words. I found my first Buffalo nickel in the wild. Now I want to find the V nickel, the IH penny and, of course, more war nickels from rolls.
