A buddy of mine who has fallen on rough times just brought over a bag of miscellaneous jewelry that his recently-ex wife left behind. He knows I collect PMs and said he'd offer the whole bag to me for $25, so I took him up on it because he's my friend and because I'm hoping I might find at least $25 in scrap silver or gold in the batch. I've noticed some of the rings are clearly marked .925 sterling (although the ones marked ".925" and "China" kinda worry me ), but since I have almost no experience with gold, I'm wondering what markings I need to look for and where they would be on some of the earrings and chains in the batch. I'm hoping my digital camera will be back from the dead in the next couple days, so I'll post a photo on here of the lot and see what you guys think.
Also, on the off chance that his ex left behind real stones in the batch (probably unlikely, but I'm an optimist), where and for how much could I get one of those devices that tests the density of stones to see if stones are actually diamonds?

Nice buy even if it is only to help out a friend.
First off, try to find someone who does jewelry appraising for a low fee or free (I know of one jeweler in my area who will take a look for free and tell me if what I have is real or fake.)
I would take this route to save yourself the time and effort of trying to figure out if the gems are real or not. You might also want to do this with unmarked gold.
If the gold jewelry isn’t broken look for the following- .416 for 10K .500 for 12K .583 for 14K .750 for 18K
European Jewelry tends to be marked with three digit numbers.
Heres hoping you at least triple your money. |
I change with the times- but like silver coins found in your change I stay the same. ***************** The United States of America started out as the new Republic of Rome.

A coin shop or a coin collecting supply shop. Or, some of the larger book stores that have a section for coin collecting/stamp collecting. I got a 16x one at a book store and a less powerful one at the coin shop although the coin shop had a stronger one but I couldn't use it with my vision problems.
Good luck!
