Hello all,
I've been a fan of coins since I was little. Back in college (a few years ago) I thought I had a rare (magnetic) 1974 lincoln cent struck in brass-clad or bronze-clad steel. I had it run through a mass spectrometer, and found gold on it. It turned out it was just a gold-plated cent, something commonly done around that time. It was still fun to find all that out, and in the process I learned quite a bit about the history of the cent, and all the rare varieties.
I also started sorting nickels around that time, looking for the low mint varieties. I collected a few rolls worth of those. Good times.
Now, thanks in part to the impending O-pocalypse, and from reading here, I've started sorting pennies. I did my first box yesterday, from Brinks. I haven't counted the number of coppers, but I found 5 wheats (including 2 in one roll), one Canadian king, one struck off-center (maybe that's common?), and two 1974 cents that look uncirculated. Not bad! What do you think?

Welcome to the penny sorting addict recovery program, there is still hope. If you don't act now in your near future you will be spending countless hours sorting pennies, buying your first Ryedale, and then claiming you found a wild indian.
Now for your questions, 5 wheats is low for me, the least I have ever gotten from a box was 10 and the most 27, but I average 17. Canadian king I am assuming it is George the VI is semi rare. If it is King George the V, some claim he is harder to find than Indians. The off center is not common, I have only found 1 that was slightly off center, but is only worth something if it is way off center. |

Hello and welcome! Sounds like an average (22%CU + or -) score based on your wheat count. Some are spoiled with much higher counts... ;-) |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

| Thanks for the information! This is the first I recall finding that's off-center, and it's only about 5% off at that. |

Off struck cents are super common, but not worth a lot either. Either way welcome and nice finds! |

| Welcome to one of the nicest forums you will ever be a part of. We have sorters and collectors of all sorts here ripe full of useful knowledge to lend (family and friends think it's all useless, but we know better). Seperating your wheats is a good start, rolls of those go for more than regular copper cents. I'm sure you know that they carry a more numismatic premium than the 1959's and up. As a hand sorter I can tell you that you may encounter a few rare coins that will help you in affording to grow in your hobby of sorting. Anyways, welcome to the party. |

Not spoiled at all.. I only get 20%. I just sort more!
Percentages tend to vary widely depending on where you are in the country.. with the best being in the Michigan, Wisconsin and Maine area and the lowest in Atlanta, San Antonio and AZ.
Welcome to the forum Brian! |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

This weekend I will be sorting pennies, I ordered 1000 rolls from bank. Had been doing halves looking for silver. figured a 40% return its worth getting pennies so I can buy more silver. LOL |

Welcome to your newest addiction. You'll find it's easy to do. Even when I travel, which is a lot, I sort pennies in the hotel that I pick up from local banks during the day and return to another bank the next. I lug the coppers back in my suitcase at the end of the trip. It's nice to come home and add them too the stash.
