I have been sorting pennies with the Ryedale for some time now. Getting bags and boxes, basically in whatever form I can get to reach my weekly goal.

It seems to be getting pretty boring going to the banks, picking up coins. Running them through the Ryedale. THen returning the zincs.

It is just so routine that I sometimes don't even want to bother with them.( getting burned out)

But the fact that they are already worth more than face helps me push forward.

Sorting is like a part time job. Heck even like a 2nd full time job at times.

Has anyone else had to push through just to keep up the pace?

Things I tell myself:

1) If you can do it and don't, then prepare for future self-induced mental anguish
2) Why let someone else get your pennies?
3) How else can you get a +35% return with 0 risk?
4) Over time, the zinc:copper ratio will increase. Sort now while the odds are in your favor
5) Nobody is going to give you the copper, but it's there for you if you want to work for it.
6) That one teller is kinda cute
7) You bought the Ryedale, now use it.
8) There are 330 million Americans, and only about 3,000 penny sorters, less than 300 of them have serious sorting equipment (Ryedale), the rest are hand sorting. If you have a Ryedale, then you are ahead of 99.999101% of the rest of the US population, and only represent 10% of the estimated penny sorting public. We're talking about the opportunity cost of NOT sorting with the Ryedale.
9) boring beats poor every time
10) a 1909 S VDB has to be in circulation somewhere

I know I was getting a little burned out and had some people teasing me about doing it. When I found my 1866 Indian Head Penny that motivated me to keep going. I guess the hope of finding a coin worth 100's of dollars keeps me going.

I try to do it while I'm watching TV but of course I am hand sorting

I'm there - probably beyond burned out.

I've dumped over 20 tons of zinc/steel over the years......it sucks.....I pretty much took about 6 months off....plus pretty much started to run out of money for hoarding.

I'm slowly getting back into it.

I have a few more tons to go.

Slick, if it bores you that much take a month or two break. You could also buy copper cents from members here on realcent.

I know you guys like copper searching and hoarding. At a 25% copper cent rate, doesn't that mean you've got to come up with a lot of CASH to maintain your search for coppers. I think silver searching for halves or dimes requires less CASH outlay. Silver searching is sort of a poor man's approach to hoarding.

Yes you have to have cash to sort copper. Lets just use easy numbers here

$500.00 a week pick-up
25% CU yield ( probably less)

That is $125.00 a week in copper pennies just sitting.

Ok now get a $500.00 box of halves. Find 15 40% halves( sweet box )

Now you have $7.50 tied up on something that is worth $30 +/-

So yes copper penny sorting is a higher cost but it always yields something. I have never heard of a $500.00 skunk on pennies. If you didn't get copper you got something better ..you got BU coins.

But you can buy $500 in halves every week and get skunked for a month or two.

I ain't quitting, just slowing down for a few weeks.

I think the summer heat here in the south takes it toll on me and I don't feel like doing anything. near 100 degree days with high humidity beats me down.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

Awesome posts (I know people hate that line, but this thread has some good ones).

I was just getting tired last week. I'm off on vacation soon, so hopefully when I get back I will be recharged. I've been skunked on halves for three boxes now, so I switched to pennies (I love that word, brings me back to childhood) for the time being.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

If it becomes boring then perhaps switch it up a bit i.e. sort some halves, search for buffalo and war nickels, trade a few hundred ounces of gold back and forth on ebay etc.

Some good advice. I went through that last year as a hand sorter. I think there was a lack of exciting boxes or exciting finds, so it became kind of routine. MH hits on some good points, and I like what jonflyfish said in the post above mine about switching things up. Right now I have taken a break from US copper cents, and have been hitting coin shops for common Morgans and Peace Dollars. Two weeks ago I found a 1922 Peace Dollar for $15 in AU condition that is a VAM 1F. APMEX has a few examples in the hundreds of dollars, and Vamworld lists it as "rare" with some nice recent sales:

So dont be afraid to mix it up a little and try to keep it fresh. I've had a blast doing the VAM searches and plan to make a road trip out of the area to hit up a few shops.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Some of you guys haven't been doing it long enough to get burnt out. If it's already happening, then a break is in order for you. I like all aspects. I'm not comparing myself to c140cessna, but I've done more than a few myself and still love it. Teasing? Who cares. The teasers are just ignorant. They'd rather inappropriate language their money away. You are never "out" any money, you are just saving it in another form. I say sort, sort, sort....

Just hang in there. With alternative energies the demand for copper is going up. With inflation problems and the weaken of the US dollar I have a feeling we will shoot past 06 levels in no time.

yeah it can get boring. I was getting burned out on halves to the point where I didn't want to touch them anymore even though my finds were far above average. I was up to 4 boxes or so per day during the weekdays for about 2 weeks last month. Dumping them to avoid running into cashflow problems became a PITA and a nuisance.

gotta pace yourself and keep in mind that it's supposed to be a hobby (and therefore fun).

Slickeast, just keep looking at your steadily-growing copper pile and remind yourself that your supply of real money is increasing every day that you sort. The only reason I stopped sorting after about 560,000 coins and sold my Ryedale to Misteroman is because my schedule got really, really packed (and more than eight months later, it still is). Think of sorting as a huge scavenger hunt, because nobody knows what they'll find as they're sorting, and when you find those really cool old coins, whether it's a bunch of Indian Heads or just really cool old wheats, it's different every time and half the fun is just seeing what will come out of your Ryedale next. Hang in there, we all go through dry periods, but once you're sitting on a C140Cessna-size pile of coppers, you'll be glad you did this.

Having said that, Cessna, watch out for the competition.

The question was: Is sorting getting boring?

The answer is: No! I love to find the two birth years that I am looking for now in the zincs and I always have the anticipation of being able to find something really cool and worthwhile.

You never know what you could find in your next roll, or even in your pocket change! So all of that keeps me searching and enjoying myself.

Enjoy.
