Hi everyone,
My name is Jeff and i just want to say, that after lurking here for a week, i've decided to become a CH! I always had a thing for interesting coins, and my wife does too.. as she had collected wheats well before i met her, and has a few interesting coins such as a 1942 merc dime, 1920 and 1937 buffalo nickels as well as a '43 steel penny and other coins from around the world.
Well, anyways, after hand sorting through the pennies i had saved for years, i had yielded a good amount of copper and a few wheaties myself and added it to the handful she already had.
So my awesome find..
While the wife was working late, I took our two year old son and headed to my local bank .. which will become my pickup bank, for my first bank roll pickup and asked if they had any boxes of pennies.. although they didn't have any $25 dollar boxes, i asked if they had some rolls i could buy.. The teller told me she could scrounge up about $10 worth. No problem, $10 is a good start to get a feel for what i'm about to do, and if i don't come up with much, no big deal, ya know?
So my wife gets home and after dinner we dive into the bag and start opening rolls. We start counting off the earliest years we come across and we try to see who can get the earliest..
Well, she beat me.
My earliest? a '60.
Hers? she finds two wheaties (a '54 and a '48).. and then a few minutes after those (about half hour after starting) she pulls this..

So needless to say, i'm sure she pretty much wins this round.. but i'm determined to start finding better condition or older, or more!!
But yeah, finding an 1893 IHP in a bank roll.. that's a pretty sweet way to start off!! We also yeilded a total of 3 wheats, and 8 canadian pennies with only 1 post-1996.
Man, i'd love to get a Ryedale, too bad i don't have the ching to spend on it.
So that's me, and that's my introduction!

Sleeping Martyr, welcome. I'm calling beginners luck on the Indian, hehe. Some here sort thousands of dollars face before they find one. Awesome indeed. I can tell you now have the sickness, welcome to the show. Post well and post often!

Oh, i plan on checking around here on a daily basis. I already picked up a box this morning from my bank, at another branch.. and my main branch has ordered me a box for Tuesday.. So we'll have plenty to hand-sort through this week.
As for zinc-disposal, we are opting for going to the coin-star and putting it on either an amazon gift, or Lowe's.. My wife has some mursing books to purchase for the fall semester, so what better way to pay than with zinc? |

Sleeping Martyr...Welcome. Congrats on the IH. Over ten months sorting for me and none spotted yet.
I love the way that you and your wife made a little competition out of searching through the pennies. Awesome!
Continued success. |

| Congrats on the find! Eight months of searching and I've come up with zero Indian Heads. However, I have a friend who claims he found an IH (which he showed me) in his change. He thinks he got it at a Wendy's. Needless to say I didn't take that well. : ) |

Welcome to the forum, Jeff. Congrats on finding an Indian Head in your first run. There are still members of this forum that don't believe they exist.. imagine that. I think average for serious sorters here works out to about 1 Indian Head every 100,000 pennies searched. Since you got yours early, it might be a while before you see another one. Even with the heavy sorting I do, I still haven't found one this year. I got 12 last year, and 9 the year before. I think it's great that your whole family is involved in the hobby. The Coinstar disposal method is ok for smaller quantities if you can use the gift cards, but if you start doing serious volumes you might have to find a dump bank or 2. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Or the casino that's local to me! I'm actually going to stop there tomorrow or sometime this week to give them a test run on the penny returns because they have penny slots.
so my wife and i did our first $25 box.. by hand.. that took a good few hours!! we did find a half dozen or so wheats.. and there is one that i have that's either a 1917, or a 1947 with the 4 rubbed down.. it's pretty well worn so i can't reall tell.. even scanned it in ultra high resolution, and i can't make it out.
We also found a 1971 Bermuda Hog penny. and a king george canadian (that makes 5 we have). |

Try looking on Lincoln't shoulder for the designer's initials. A 1917 will not have them, a 1947 will. |

It looks like an Indian Head is all it takes for the addiction to take hold. I have been hand sorting for a few weeks now with my 9 year old son (and wife when the spirit moves her). I was telling my son how hard it is to find "Wild Indians" in these rolls and how some people can go months and months without ever finding one. Each box is a treasure hunt for him. Well, on our 5th $25 box my son pulls a nice 1902 IH. He jumped up and ran around the house screaming "I found one. I found one!!!!
He is now officially hooked (I am too). Of course he found out about flying eagle cents and now wants to find one of those too. Not a day goes by that he doesn't ask if I can get another box. He wants to do a whole one by himself.
Thanks for all of your great posts. They have been really informative. I have been reading for a while and decided to join.
I just started, but am I the only one who gets disappointed when I get change back from a purchase and there are no coppers? |
