Do you guys save your 1982 pennies? If so, do you keep them seperated from the 1981s and earlier one?

| Heck yeah....75% of my 1982's are copper from coin roll searching, and I get roughly 70-80 per box of $25.00 face. They are copper, so I save them just the same as the 1981 and earlier ones. |

| bounce them off of a table. you can tell the difference. Test with a known copper and a known zinc. The zinc has a thud(sounds dead) the copper has a ring to it. |

| I use a digital scale and weigh them individually. My hearing doesnt seem to be sharp enough to notice the difference in sound. I can for silver though. :P |

| I also use a small digital scale...spent about $10 on it and have really enjoyed it. I have pretty good luck with 82's, getting about 90% of them copper. |

| Save them? Absolutely. And, I keep them seperated until I've determined they are copper. As the previous members have responded in earlier posts, a high percentage of them are copper. |

| I keep all of them in a separate box. I don't get too many overall, and I figure most of them are copper, and at a later date I will separate copper from zinc. |

Tell us more! Do you have mintage numbers for the different types of 1982 LMC's? I think there are 7 total varities, so are the 1982 small date ones more rare? |

| i am not sure of mintages but the*edit**small date 1982 zinc is somewhat scarce. Just look next time you roll search. I look for that doubled die on the reverse in E pluribus unum. I looked it up and it was ten billion 1982 cents made thats with large/small 95%copper and the zinclons. I do know that the lowest made is the 1982p Small date zinclons. Apmex had some 1982 small date zinclons in a original bank roll but i dont see it anymore. Redbook list them at $1.25 in Ms-65 |

| I went through 108 1982 cents last night and 94 were copper. Only 14 zinc cents. It's a good idea to save and test them before returning the 1982s back into circulation. |

| I'm a small hand sorter, and of course I save the '82's. Been tossing them into a coffee can. Started going thru them, and the majority are copper. |

I weigh them as well. The coppers weigh about 20% heavier. A digital scale costs about $10 and is very handy. I also use it to check the coins which are too gunked up for the date to be visible. Unfortunately, I have an impressive collection of "ugly Abes."
I think I can hear the difference, but I'd rather be 100% sure. |

Yep I use a similar scale not just for the 1982's, but also the ones were there is crud covering the date. If they turn out to be copper, they go in the copper pile like the rest of the 1959-1982's. Once in awhile I will come across a box with a bunch of what must be either metal detecting finds, or cents cashed in from a wishing well/fountain. Those can be pretty nasty so I wont spend alot of time trying to make out the date when the scale is 100% accurate. |

| I can pretty much look at an 82 and feel it in my hand and tell the difference. on the zinc ones they have a lot of gas bubbles b/c the mixture wasnt that great. and the copper ones of course have clean surfaces |

One possibility is selling them to be melted when the ban is lifted. In that case the ugly abes will be the first ones to go. Hopefully their condition will less of an issue. The second possibility is selling them to other collectors. However, I really don't see other collectors wanting them unless they are deeply discounted.
Also, I separate out the uglies so when the time comes the sell my regular coppers to other collectors, I can honestly say there are no culls.
I see my copper collecting as a long term strategy, so I don't think I will consider selling them until they are at least 5Xs to 10Xs face and that may not be for several years. |
