Hey everyone,

I recently took a trip from NW Iowa out to NW Oregon. I decided that instead of driving straight there I was going to see parts of the country I had never been to before and also hit small town banks to look through half dollars! Here are my results

Day 1 I started in SE South Dakota and worked my way North and a little east. Mainly North though. I went to 22 Banks in 18 differnt towns. I was able to get $2078 worth of halves. I found 27 40% and 2 90% Enough to pay for my gas and more!

Day 2 Started in the SE corner of North Dakota. Worked my way N up to the Canadain border. I ran into a HUGE problem on this day. Turns out some guy from MN was regularly going to 95% of the banks I hit that day I went to 26 banks in 20 towns and was only able to get $555 worth of halves. I found 5 40% and 1 proof. Paid for a little of my gas. Dang that guy in MN

Day 3. Started in NE corner of North Dakota and worked my way into NE Montana. I tried to stay as close to the border as I could in hope to find some Canadain toonies in with the halves, but was only able to find loose rolls. I hit 18 banks in 10 towns. Was able to get $1032 in halves. Found 17 40%, 2 90%, and 1 proof. Enough to pay for my gas and a little more!

Day 4 Started in NE Montana and worked my way to Idaho. I hit 17 banks in 11 towns. Was able to get $1242 in halves and found 12 40%. Paid for almost all my gas.

Day 5 Started in NE Idaho and worked my way in Washington. I ran into a very touristy area so I only hit the banks for a few hours this day and than went to my destination. I hit 4 banks that day and got $420 in halves. I found 8 40%

Total found was 69 40% 4 90% and 2 proofs. If I sold them all I would have made enough money to pay for my gas! I was hopeing for the big score in one of these little towns but that 1 day going N in ND really hurt! Also I ran into a few banks that had really old tellers who worked there who activly searched for silver!

Just thought I would share my little road trip with you guys.

If any of you live in these areas PM me and I will send you a list of the towns I hit.

good stuff bro. and yeah, it's pretty interesting how you can see new roads & places that you wouldn't have if you weren't bouncing around from bank to bank.

When I think of all the rural places that I have drove by I always think of all the goodies that would be there. As much as we would like to think those places are in the dark, its likely they know and have a couple sorters there. Did you run into any problems with not having an account or any other bs at those banks?

Nice score with the silver! You story alone proves to the nay sayers that there is silver still out there and in different parts of the country.

Yeah ever since I got started sorted halves I dreamnt about going to rural little towns out in the middle of no where to find silver. Im sure theres some bank somewhere that has nothing but silver!

No, I never ran into problems with not having an account. A few banks asked me if I did. When I said no they didnt seem to care. Most banks dont like to keep halves because there hardly ever used.

A few banks asked me where I was from, I guess my "accent" is a little differnt then theres (No, Im not a hick since im from Iowa! Just differnt "accent" in each part of the country) I sure got some weird looks when I told them that I was from Iowa! There like what in the world brought you to this little town of 500 people! HAHA

I opened a Well Fargo and a U.S bank free checking account solely for the purpose of dumping halves on the trip I was thinking I would end up with a lot more halves. The 2nd day and last day really cut into the total number though!

The first time I tried to dump the WF bank didnt have a coin counter!!!!

I ended up dumping $500 at 1 U.S bank and than 3k at another U.S bank! The 3k was my biggest dump yet! They where more than happy to take them, but the whole bank stared at my while I dollied them in HAHA I than dumped the rest at my end location.

So a total of 3 dumps.

i dont know if anyone else has this problem but when i go to dump my halves i have to take one box to one bank and the other to another bank to dump because the counter has just a small tray for half dollars and large bags for the other coins, it takes forever because they have to keep emptying the tray. does anyone else have this problem?

Last fall I hit some of those Eastern N Dakota banks and found they had no halfs at all. Now I know why.
