Just finished searching through a few of the CWRs that I was able to pick up at my bank this past week.
Had an amazing three rolls to search that contained 155 copper pennies in total--and one of the rolls was actually short!
One penny was a 1959 Canadian, and there were 123 S mint marks total. I have never seen that many in my entire life. They ranged from 1968-S - 1974-S. Not a wheat cent to be found though in any of the rolls.
I called my brother to let him know since he has been a coin collector for a very long time. He was completely astounded at what I had come across.
Thanks for letting me share this amazing find.
Enjoy.

These were the normal 50 count penny rolls. One roll was short 3 cents. One roll was over 3 cents and the third roll was over 5 cents. So that equals 155 coins, all of which were copper. Nothing older than 1959 sadly. But the 123 S mint marks was the real joy!

| They are worth more generally that p and d mints, solely because the san fran mint doesn't mint as many as denver and Philadelphia. Philadelphia by far mints the most coins. BTW, if you don't have a red book already I'd reccomend you buy one. It shows approximate values for the coins that you may find sorting. (Keep in mind the book lists for how much a dealer would charge). Values are approx 20% high. subtract about 35% for what a dealer should pay you, or buy a blue book for exact values. |

To give you an idea, look at what APMEX does....
Wheat Cent Bags - 5,000 Count - Minted from 1909-1958 $239.99 "S" Mint Wheat Cent Bag - 5,000 - SAN FRANCISCO Mint 1940-1955 $319.99
The dates are only 1940-1955, but they still charge $80 more per 5,000.

I have a Blue Book. I got one last year when I began searching through the coin rolls for the birthday coin project I had begun in case I should come across anything that might be of value.
I did get every roll that she had left that the person had brought in. She didn't say how many she had gotten originally or if she had given very many of the rolls out to anyone else. For once, my brain was functioning properly and I knew to ask for all that she had of those.
Sadly, I have searched through more of the rolls and have not found one wheat cent but did find a few more of the S mint marks. I love to see those wheat stalks on the reverse.
My brother called me this morning and was still talking about all of the S mint marks in the three rolls--I guess I made an impression on him. He has been a coin collector for 40 plus years and he was still astounded by this find of mine. He says in all of his years of searching coin rolls he has never come across anything like that.
Enjoy. |
