Poll Question:
You often hear from mainstream financial advisors to hold not more than 5-10% of your portfolio in precious metals. Obviously, they have more to gain if you allow them to invest you in mutual funds, stocks, etc. At this time I am personally approaching 25% of my net worth in PMs (versus real estate, equities, cash and other miscellaneous personally property). I'm curious to see what the forum members think.

What percentage of your net worth do you currently hold in precious metals?

Choices:

0 - 5%
6 - 10%
11 - 20%
21 - 35%
36 - 50%
51 - 70%
71 - 80%
81%+

Almost 85% of my money since I don't make enough money (I'm 14) to buy stocks, bonds, or real estate. I don't trust banks. I'm certainly not going to hold on to FRN's. I'm trying to sell some of my silver though to eventually reach around 50/50.

You're going to sell some of your silver to be 50/50 in what? What would be worth selling your silver for?

32% in gold/silver. Copper excluded.

The total includes cash & investment assets only though. I know I have positive equity in my home, but I'm not going to bother trying to figure out FMV.

Whatever approach you take the goals are the following:

(1) When you are younger, accumulate wealth.
(2) When you are older, protect your wealth.

If most of your assets is in one asset category: real estate, commodities, cash (allows you to buy other assets on the cheap), stocks, bonds, race horses, farming, or something else, you are taking a big risk that your view of the future could be wrong. It's sort of like putting all your money into one stock: it could skyrocket (to the moon) or go bankrupt. I believe the best long term approach is that each person needs investments diversified in different categories.

I'm somewhat surprised by the number of people who responded <5% (considering the nature of this forum) and am equally surprised by the votes for 81%+! Very interesting results so far indeed...

I'm nearly 85% in precious metals, not sure if that is 100% a good thing, but hey I like them more anyways! I was smiling when I lost virtually nothing investment wise with the big downfall. Had all my money invested in coins/precious metal at the time on the low side.

I had to put in around 50%. It was a lot lower, but most of my investments are in numismatic coins. e.g. high grade Morgans/bulk wheats/older type coins. I've been trying to gain a little bit in junk 90% silver.

I'm at about 70-75 percent, but that's only because I'm trying to rebuild my depleted cash reserves, which will push my PM percentage down. I don't have any consumer goods worth much, so basically it's just my PMs and cash at this point.
