I live in the Virginia countryside. For one reason or another, June 1 was the day my wife and I finally drove down the back roads towards Richmond, VA. While the plan was to do lunch and some shopping in Richmond at our favorite Super China King restaurant, I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to check out a number of rural banks between our home and Richmond. Using Google maps the night before, I planned my road trip the night before - plenty of rural banks for me to check out.

First stop was going to be rural Bowling Green, VA. Google maps shows 10 rural banks in this small town. When we get there, I found most of the banks listed on the printout have either moved or have been closed down. However, there were two banks there. Union Bank & Trust Co. is the bank I use for my dumps, but not at this branch. It's an old bank, with a museum in the lobby. So, I ask the teller, "Do you have any halves that I can have?". "No, sir - only this one." "OK, do you have a coin counting machine like the other branches do?." "Yes, we do." "OK, can I have the halves attached to the coin counting machine?" "No, we can't give you the bag until it has $1000 in it." "OK, if I top off the bag with halves that I have, and when there is $1000 in it, can I buy the bag?" "Let me go talk to the head teller." Head teller comes and says, "You want the halves to look for the silver ones?" I say, "Yes, but if I top off the bag with coins that I have in the car, can I buy the bag?" "All right, if you top it off and pay us the difference, you can have the bag, but we can take only those halves from you that would top off the bag." "That's great, I will take the bag." I go back to the car and get $500 of dump halves in two canvas bags. The other teller and I go to the coin counting room. I give her the two canvas bags that I have brought with me, and the coin counting machine eats them until the machine reads $1000 - and then it stops. The teller takes the bag off of the coin counting machine and places a new bag on. Then, she opens up the machine and gives me back the halves that were still in the counter that had not been counted yet. I got back to the teller's counter and give her $726 (there are 1452 halves in this bag that were in it before I came along to top it off ). I have my bag and my other halves that I did not need to give them. Out to the car I go with my big plastic bag of halves.

Other stops were made without success. However, south of Hanover, VA is a BB&T bank branch that looked interesting. They had one CWR roll of halves which I took. They didn't have any other halves, so I asked, "Do you have any of the 2009 coins?". "Yes we do, we have the 2009 pennies." "I'll take any of them that you can give me." - 16 rolls of Lincoln Log Cabins . "We have 36 of these old dollar coins, do you want them too?" "Yes I do; you don't see Eisenhower dollars much anymore." When I got home, I opened the roll of halves. The entire roll was 40% silver - most of them were BU 1966 halves.

After lunch in Richmond, VA and a little shopping, my wife and I are on our way back - destination Ashland, VA. Another Union Bank & Trust is located there. "Maybe I can get another big bag of halves here, I think to myself." Well, the bank manager was a little cautious, and I got the line, "We can not give you the bag until it's full and then we will have to hand count the 2000 coins." I said, "OK, do you have any 2009 coins?" "Yes, we do. We have these 2009 Guam quarters. How many rolls do you want?" I said, "I'll take all the rolls that you can afford to give me." Out comes the opened $500 box of Guam quarters from under the teller’s counter, 36 rolls in all. Teller number two has 10 more rolls. So, I end my day trip here with 46 rolls of brand new 2009 Guam quarters .

I have not looked at the $1000 bag yet. It's still sealed. But, bringing it in the house, I can see that wonderful shiny silver glow on a few coins in the bottom of the bag that tells me my day has only begun .

great story, and good job.

My guess is that you'll find quite a few silvers in that bag. If you can already spot a few on the outside, it indicates that there's probably a lot more on the inside. I'll stab a guess at 60 silvers total, if you dont mind.

You're lucky that their coin machine sorts by denomination. The ones here just dumps all the coinage together, and most have a policy of no halves, no dollar coins.

Please don't come up to DC or NOVA. I don't need any competeition.

I have never thought about buying the bag from the coin machine? I might try that next time?

One of these days i am going to take a day off and hit bank after bank in Downtown DC.

I took a trip into the closest town, hit seven banks. No 50 cent pieces. One bank that the new pennies but limited to two rolls but had to have an account so I passed but did pick $200 at one bank.
Will go over them later.

Your story inspired me to test the waters. Got two rolls of halves from the bank today. Found 1 (one) 1967 JFK 40% half. Glad to get one.
