Is it worth it to pull wheats from the copper?

If you are a "heavy hitter" using a ryedale to sort high volumes of pennies is it worth the time to go through looking for wheats?

If you are in it for the long haul and are waiting for copper to hit $10/lb won't the wheats be worth more for their melt value than as a wheat.

When silver was $50/oz alot of numismatic coins got melted because they were worth more for their melt value.

I use to pull the wheats but now that I have increased the amount of pennies I sort every week they are just sitting in the buckets along with all the other coppers.

I figure they are there waiting in buckets if I choose to pluck them out later.

I would because you never know when you might pull a semi-key or key date. And right now you can get 4x face for the common ones, and use that money to increase your copper hoard. I'm not a heavy hitter and a hand sorter, but really how long does it take to sift through say 10,000 coppers looking for wheats? I would venture a guess that it can be done in under an hour, and find it hard to believe that people can't spare an hour every couple of days to do this. Just my two cents worth...bash away!

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

If wheats get melted en masse then I would have to say the remaining wheats should keep pace nicely. Would you want to melt a 09 s vdb? How about a carson city dollar?

My point is if people melt, commons become rarities.

I think its worth it to pull the wheats, if I was a large scale sorter with a ryedale, I would still hand sort through the coppers for the wheaties, and even look for the memorial S-mints. The fun is finding those few and far between coins, especially a few from the teens and 20's that occasionally show up. Like Kurr said, Once large volumes of copper pennies get melted, all the coins that are left, espcially wheats and low mintage year memorials, will increase in rarity and value.

I would also pull any wheats that I could find. If you looking at building a pile of copper you could trade now and double your hoard Then wait for copper to go up.

I pull all Wheats and Canadians, but I have to admit that it is quite time consuming. I'm nowhere in the vacinity of the speed from the Ryedale or the other machines. I've thought about sorting through the buckets of Canadians and separate them also, but thats another project.

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband.

I agree that it is VERY time consuming. I just don't have the time now to do it.

I am just stacking buckets. I have the ones with the wheats pulled from marked.

I know for most they look at it from a hobby stand point and it is time spent doing their hobby. Now I do enjoy pulling wheats. I just don't have the time.

I just wanted to see what everyone elses thoughts were.

Heck I am at subway waiting for my mom to finish eating...that is how I have time to post.

I pull.

However, understand that if you're selling on ebay or to some other private investor, they're likelier to pay a higher price (way more than 4 cents per wheat) for "unsearched and unsorted" lots.

I pull the wheats. I cannot be 100% certain of getting 4c each for my pennies ever, but I am sure I can get 4c each for my wheats. NOW.

There is no such thing as unsearched or unsorted lots. Ever. Unless it comes from some old lady.

I fear that this time of melting coppers might be coming in the near future and I don't have enough yet. As a hand sorter I don't know if I will be holding enough when this time comes. I need a Ryedale badly. Oh yeah, I pull my wheats out too.

As a hand sorter, naturally I pull any wheats I see. I think if I was a pretty high volume machine sorter, I would probably run as many pennies as possible through the machine and only search through the copper for wheats when additional spare time permits. Like the last poster mentioned, you never know when pennies may be discontinued or shut off...

Wheats will always be worth more than copper memorials. You might even get lucky and get some good ones. If you do a copper sort on the Ryedale, it will usually drop wheats dated 1940 and earlier on the zinc side.. very easy to pluck out before dumping your zinc.

I pull my wheats when I have time.. but I never have time.. lol. As long as you don't sell off your copper, you have control of it. You can always pull the wheats out later when there are no more pennies to sort. By focusing on just running as many raw pennies through the Ryedales as you can, like slick, you actually capture more wheats.

When I go through the labor intensive process of "refining" my copper cents, I pull out the wheats and canadians, as well as all the "ugly Abes."

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

you are correct HCBTT. I do a zinc accept first. then run a copper accept. the older wheats usually fall in the zinc pile. that is how I found the IHC.

I have increased the volume of pennies I do to the point that I really don't have time now to look for the wheats.

like HCBTT said, as long as I am not selling they are just sitting in buckets telling old war stories to their younger copper siblings.

I also do a Ryedale zinc accept first then a copper pass on the rejects and pull wheats as I see 'em from both sides then stack the remaining "unsearched" face down wheats in the hoard for a later date. This yields a few wheat rolls plucked every week.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

My two cents opinion is to do a search and pull. Pull wheats, S mint marks and anything else that may be of value, ie, error coins.

Like the book "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" states: Have you ever knowingly spent $100.00 on a candy bar or $50.00 on a soft drink? You know you wouldn't. So why risk there being a valuable coin in your unsearched pile of coins that you may save or you may sell off. You'd be kicking yourself in the pants if you even thought there might be a chance that you got rid of a really valuable coin...IMHO.

Enjoy.

To keep the wife happy, I've limited my hoard to one room in the basement and lately been sorting out the wheats and canadians so that I can sell the remaining. I'm in the process of rolling all my canadian copper and after one night I already have a full box. Everytime the wife goes down into my "penny room" I tell her that I'll put another box on E-bay, lol.

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband.
