Noticed a small garage sale while picking up the Grandson so decided to stop and check it out. Nothing really exciting but noticed a sandwich bag with quite a lot of tangled up chains, necklaces, a senior ring, wedding bands, some bracelets, watches with broken bands and misc. all for 50 cents. Why not? Got home and spent several hours untangling but noticed some that looked interesting. I am really not a jewelry person so mostly can't tell real from cheapo but started looking for markings.

1 20" (.83 oz)necklace with broken latch with just 14K on the clasp
1 10K large mans senior ring
1 10K small ladies wedding band
1 20" (.28 oz) necklace maybe called herringbone with 14K Italy
1 20" necklace with 1/20th 14K G.F.
1 7" Bracelet that I can't read the marking except for an F and Turkey on the clasp.
1 20" chain with .925 Italy

My question is - where would be the best place to take these to find out if there is any value to them. Is there something special about 14K Italy. Still have alot to untangle and go through but surely the bag was well worth the 50 cents. Any help will be appreciated.

I would take them to a local jewelry dealer or a place that buys gold. Just because you go there doesn't mean that you have to sell. BTW, great find! 14GF is not worth much, btw, and the 7" bracelet probably doesn't have any value. However everything else seems like it has value. Great find for 50 cents!

My granddaughter took the bracelet immediately. Is there any demand for old watches. There were 2 Seiko and the rest were mostly Timex. Will definately try to find out about the other things. Thanks!

I'd guess Italy is just where it was made. Sterling silver chain alone is worth the price. Free gold is good gold.
You must be logged in to see this link. has an handy calculator.

I get at melt:
474.45 USD for the first .83 oz 14k necklace.
160.06 USD for the .28 oz 14k nacklace

need weights for the balance of the items.

WOW! I would say that was really worth the 50 cents. The SS chain has a cross on it and weighs .38 oz. I will definately take them Monday and check out some more garage sales. That might give me the opportunity to buy some silver. Thank you for the reply and help. Makes me want to return the stuff and tell the two young girls having the sale what they sold for 50 cents.

Oh... you might regret telling the sellers about your good fortine. That's what we are for :) Report back when you figure out what everything is worth.

I will let you know. I just found a coin in the bottom that is actually a 1988 Australian $2.00 coin and a SS Ring (.18 oz). Yeah, I know but I hate to think these girls might really need the money, then again maybe they just needed blow money. Since I'd have to drive 60 miles, I guess I will just keep quiet. Would like to send a picture but haven't mastered that yet.

Sounds like you hit the jackpot! Awesome finds! Any chance of posting a photo to share with us? I'm a huge garage sale freak. Love doing it but the fuel prices make it more of a hobby than a profit making venture. Unless I have YOUR LUCK!

Ok, trying to learn to send a picture. This is part of what I got in the baggie. Two of the watches has 10K and 18K casing.

Was that priced for a quick sale, or what? Wish I could find deals like that. Nice going.

It really looked like some one cleaned out a drawer or jewelry box. All twisted and tangled. Like I said, it was just 2 young girls and they probably didn't have a clue what was in there. I didn't really either. Usually don't buy things like that but after being a member of the forum and reading about all the finds others had found, decided what the heck. Can't wait to see if Jadedragon was right on his quote. Anything over $.50 is more than I had.

4.00 AUD = 3.21796 USD (I see two coins that I guess are both AU$2.). So you got over 6X your money just in coins.

Well, I put my little baggie up for awhile since I was tired of untangling the mass of chains. Managed to get 4 bags of pennies so decided to sort a few. Nothing special so decided to untangle again. Lots of those free things we used to get in the mail but then I spotted something I had put in the PROBABLY NOTHING PILE, it was so small. It was a 1945 Dos Pesos. Another Mexico coin made into a necklace with no chain but felt quite heavy. I googled it and well surely it couldn't be gold. But I think it is .9000 1.666g gold, .04820oz. AGW, 13mm. What a surprise! I sure do need to start paying more attention. Went today to find out about the other things but the Vault, as it is called, is closed on Mondays. Any one have any ideas what this might be worth. Also found a tiny pair of 1976 penny pierced earrings. Sort of ironic that they were in there. Best little baggie I every found.

1945 dos pesos is indeed gold (unless you got a copy or something), about 1/20th of an ounce.

Finally took some of my garage sale finds to find out the value. The 20" (.83 oz)mans necklace with 14K on the clasp has gotten alot of different results. One jewelry/coin store said it was pretty much junk that the clasps probably/maybe was 14K. The second said it was gold plated something but he couldn't tell what. Not much value. The third was a jewelry store and the clerk checked it with her loop (she didn't have a gold test kit). Then she buffed on it and made a small scrape on it and finally said she thought it was gold plated sterling silver. She said the clasp would be around $100. to replace it, it was 14K. The fourth said it looked to him like Cruise Ship jewelry - looks like gold, feels like gold but really isn't gold. So, will keep trying on that one. Was offered $300 for the senior ring, small bracelet and the Herringbone necklace. Decided to hang on to it for a while. Some of the other things in the picture were no value things. Any suggestions on the Man's necklace.

The old Seikos sound interesting. They would look good in my watch box.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

One of the Seikos got a new crystal, band and cleaned and it works and looks like a new one. Hubby loves Seiko watches.
