Kerosene/Propane/Solar refrigerator, freezers, hot water heaters.
Meat Smoker - kind of a luxery item now for bbq's but bad meat kills and sickens, and invites disease, beter to preserve it.
Turkey Frier - canning and cooking, clothes washing, water sterilazation, disinfecting
Good books - no electric means no T.V. or radio for entertainment, but also means NO MORE GOOGLE!! You either know it or have it refferanced already.
Glass Jars - If the grid goes down semi permanetly watch these disappear quickly for home canning. As people re-learn how to can I'm sure they will become quite precious and common in pantries. You won't see bags of them like we see frozen dinners in the trash.

Wow, do you guys expect the world to end? I don't think the U.S will become like the middle east, or Africa.
If anything, a good gravity water purifier would work wonders. |

I'm in indiana we went like 10 days with no electric last year due to a storm. Where I am at the weather storms seem to be getting more and more vilolent. Ice storms to take out poles, lines, and tree's.
I live in a spot to where I have to go 6 miles or more to get to anyone selling anything. In one direction a 2 pump gas station, bait shop, combination and the other a small town general store. No electric can be bad especially the older folks who need medical equipment. |

| How about those flashlights that you shake to build up a charge. The charge does not last long but no batteries required. |

I've never seen one of those that is worth a damn. True they use no batteries, but they only shoot a dim light for a little while. But if you have no batteries....

Nothing like a need to find out what you need. Last month I was in my car, you know always ready. Found I lost the jumper cables and electric tape. Really the only two things I neede badly.
Charcol and good dutch oven would be a good idea. |

| I have couple hand crank flash lights. One is also a radio. I think you can get them at Wal-mart or Kmart. |

"AC/DC transformer, lets me use my 12v DC car plug to charge and use 120vac appliances. Basicly turns your cig lighter into a wal recepticle."
Could you run an average refrigerator/freezer or microwave off of this? |

It would be cumbersome, but yes.
Watts/Volts = Amps Volts x Amps = Watts
Typical car battery, 12v 500Amps. Typical microwave 120V 1200W. You can do the math here:
You must be logged in to see this link.
The problem would be in whether the charging system would keep up with the load. Batteries are rated according to CCA, cold cranking amps, which is their peak output potential for a short period. Sustained load capacity is dependent on the output of the alternator, which runs from as little as 12V - 60A on some little cars, to maybe as high as 120A (or more?) on trucks or upscale cars. Even with that limitation, yes, you should be able to run a fridge or nukro-waver off an inverter, but probably nothing else at the same time.

Some people have an extra alternator installed, for high watt radio systems, should work for this as well.
Also speaking of alternators, you can mod one, and run cables off it, to have an onboard welder. Also you can use the air conditioning compressor as an... air compressor, lol. |

| i remember our grid going down almost daily two summers in a row here in california. deregulation left a BIG HOLE for corporations to get greedy. those who made the electricity were selling it at outrageous prices to people supplying it. this eventually made the news and legislature. this is what led grey davis to being ousted in his 2nd term as governor. |
