When our currency finally collapses, and imported goods become so expensive that no one can afford them -- what would be a good small business enterprise to get into?
Let's leave guns/ammo and raising crops out of this, they are a given. How about more mundane items like clothing, shoes, small hardware items. Basically any of the milliions of items we no longer produce domestically.
What I'm getting at is, if you've got a few extra FRN's going rancid in your pocket, and you'd like to invest them in the equipment to jumpstart production in the US, what would you look at?
With the massive outflow of production from the US to China in the past 10-15 years, certainly there is a lot of equipment sitting around, ready to be had for a song.
Obviously we're not talking about buying idled GM plants (God if only I had a couple hundred million FRN's ), but a much more modest scope. Maybe a couple dozen sewing machines, or a small machine shop of foundry. The possibilities are endless.
Any thoughts?

Shoe and clothing manufacture or repair.
Not fancy or expensive. People have used sandals for thousands or years. Simply knowing how to make them would be worth it. |

It probably wouldn't take much to make a basic 500-650cc motorcyle. Of course, you'd pretty much have to start from scratch (or flat out copy) an existing engine. Currently there is no such beast (that I'm aware of) being made in the US. Could probably fit the entire enterprise in a 2,000 sq ft warehouse.

Any idea how much of our manufacturing capacity has already been sent to the scrap yard? It's not an instant on-off switch. It would/will take years to to rebuild our industrial sector to the point of offsetting goods from China. |

| Do not forget a majority of our Manufacturing jobs have also went to Mexico. Since it's cheaper to hire workers there. So, not always china. Mexico would become the next China. |

"They" said that China depends on us to buy their products....News is coming out that industrial production in China has been growing by leaps and bounds the past few months. Seems they have found a pretty large market within their own borders... And they have lost their appetite for Mei jin...("American gold, aka FRN's)...
Since my original post, I've aquired something every man should have in his castle, but most guys would scoff at... a sewing machine.
$20 Singer from the parents (big time yard salers) basement. Had to spend another $20 to replace some missing parts off of ebay.
Now, when the time comes, I won't need to carry my barter PM's around in a Crown Royal bag tied to my belt, like Kurr will.. I'll make up my own PM satchel!

We'd better start now, before our supply of raw materials stops!

At a minimum...
As far as those decent wages, don't expect to be competitive with the rest of the world and to export anything. How do you think this whole mess got started? Could you afford to buy anything at Wal-mart if it was U.S. made with decent wages, and benefits? We have a dilemma on our hands...
Our wages don't need to go up, our cost of living needs to come down. I said cost, not quality. That is the only way we will ever be able to compete on a global scale.
Our products would also have to be the best quality that can be had. Not half ass garbage like so many "Made in USA" products already are.

I've got to disagree with you there BG. I'm sure there's crap being made here, but by far I find most US made products far superior to comparable product made in the 3rd world. Granted, they are more expensive, but they also last for more than one use.
Case in point, hand tools. Craftsman (still largely US made) tools -VS- the garbage at Harbor Frieght....
I think we need to get past expecting to buy anything we could ever want for the lowest price. In a previous career in the building materials business I worked at a private lumber yard catering to middle and upscale clients, we had a saying: quality/price/service, pick any two.
Compare any tool, appliance, car, piece of furniture etc -- made in US before the mid 1950's - early 60's to the imported CRAP that is your only choice to buy today. You can almost set your watch by when the import crap will fall apart, as soon as the last payment is made.

| Vehicle maintenance & Body shop. Cars will be driven into the ground instead of the 3 yr (f)lease cycles of old. |

Granted, I painted with a bit of a broad brush. But I think we are going to have to agree to disagree to some extent. My experiences have been less than stellar with the "Made in the USA" stuff for the money I paid.
I am one who only buys quality, I only want to buy an item once. I am not finding the quality on our shores as often as I should.

Granted. Nothing is built like it should be, foreign or domestic. My dad has a refridgerator ("fridgerator" to some of y'all ) at his business that was made in 1948. It has run like a champ for 60+ years.

Believe it or not, the US isn't in that bad of shape with raw materials, if we had to go it alone. Compared to Europe, or South America, the US has some kind of deposits of most industrial metals. Admittedly, they wouldn't be easy mining, or cheap to produce. |

Think locally. It wouldn't take too many people to supply basic items to a rural-suburban area.
Course in Western Loudoun we may have slightly different views (than some of the forums city-slickers ) of what constitutes as sub-urbs and city.
Oh... yes please don't lump us in with northern Virginia.Us Western Loudouners are VERY loyal to our state.
Most of us are natives too! |

| Some of the best foreign products are made in the USA. My Toyota Tundra Crewmax Ltd 4x4 is arguably the best truck on the road and it was made with pride in the great republic of Texas. |

One thing that will be in demand is 'Small Engine Repair & Maintenance' work. Lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, etc. When people will no longer be able to pay 'Maneul' to do their yard work and will be burning wood vice imported oil they will need service and repair for their equipment. The return of the itinerant tinkerer.
The old saying: "Buy it once, use it, repair it, wear it out" will become the norm. |

| I think having and being able to use machine tools and a metal lathe will be invaluable. This is because people will want replacement parts for all sorts of things, rather than throwing things away and buying new. Already, Advanced Auto Parts has experienced increased sales, while car dealers are simultaneously going under. |

That's one thing it seems most people do not understand. Talk to any liberal and they'll tell you we could setup and be producing here in the US in a matter of months if we had to. If the country that is the US today was in a serious war, who would supply the troops? Who would build the tanks, the trucks? the planes? the consumable parts for all of those? We'd be screwed. |

We could just buy it from the Russians. They are actively marketing not only their surplus, but brand designs on the open market.
Or we could outsource the manufacturing where we outsource just about everything else, China... F-22's made in China...
