Hey Guys, I've heard you mention proof coins/proof sets. What are they and how does one distinguish them (please post pics, if you can)? Thanks!

Nowadays the San Fransico mint does not produce coins for circulation. They started making proof coins. Proof coins are made differently from regular coins.
"Coins are produced when two dies strike a blank piece of metal with tremendous force. One die is engraved with the front (obverse) design for the coin. The other die has the back (reverse) coin design on it. A proof coin is made witha specially polished and treated die. By treating the die in a special way, the coins it produces have a different appearance. Modern technology allows the high points on the coin design to be acid treated (on the die). The background (field) design of the coin die is polished, resulting in a mirror-like look on the coin it strikes. This gives the finished coin a frosted look (frosting) on the raise parts of the design, with a mirror like finish on the background." (lynncoins)
Proof coins are sold in proof sets from the mint. Some people break open these sets, to take out specific coins, and then some of the coins end up in circulation. So when looking at the coin you can see a major difference between a business strike and a proof coin. Also if there is an S mint mark and the coin is made after 1975 it is definitely a proof coin, however there are proof coins from before this date.

Yeah, what he said....
Deal |
Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

| I found a Eisenhower dollar with the "S" proof mark on it. Is it worth anything other than a dollar? It does seem to be more sharply detailed and shiny when compared to the oters I have. |

Could be... :) I will give you 1 FRN for it though. Certain years the S mark Ike dollars are 40% Silver. |

| Gpowerbuck gave a great explanation of proofs. I think some older proofs don't have the frosted look. I could be wrong. |

There are two types of metal compostion for some of the proofs. Since you have a 1973S, it could be a Clad or a 40% Silver coin. |
