After being told that there would be fees from my bank for getting boxes of cents and half dollars, I decided to do a bit of walking around for a new bank. It didn't take long.

"Can I help you"
"hmmm...[thinking of how to tell her] Let's see... Can you order a bunch of pennies for me"
"What?"
"You know, $25 boxes"
"How many?"
"$500 worth every week"
"...[stunned looked]... there's going to be a fee"
"That's unfortunate. I was thinking about opening an account here, and was hoping that there would be no fees for this"
"I've heard it before. But then you'll only put in 50 bucks and never make any transactions"
"That's not really what I was thinking. If I switched my business account from another bank, would you consider dropping the fees?"
"Which bank?"
"XYZ Bank" (not really, I'll protect the name, but it is a three letter bank, and rhymes with xyz, and they own a baseball stadium in Pittsburgh)
"...[smiles]... Let me ask my manager"

So I stand there for a little bit and then she escorts me into the manager's office. I decide to tell him exactly what I plan to do, and even why... telling him how copper cents are worth more than face. And, that I want to have a standing order every week for $500. I would pick them up the day of delivery and would not be returning them to the bank, but instead to the bank down the street. I offered to switch my business account over if he'd agree to drop the fees for the boxes. I got a yes.

Then he asks me if I'm interested in other coins. I can see the look of genuine need in his face. So, I tell him only certain kinds. He then tells me that he runs a charity coin fountain for Habitat For Humanity and has too many coins. He asked me if I'm interested in them. I think I drooled.

He reached behind him and pointed the corner of his office, and said, "that thing is full." It was a cooler on wheels. He opened it and the shine nearly blinded me. Trumpets blared. Wind from an angels wings rustled my hair. The "ching" from a cash register was heard in the distance.

I gathered myself together and said that I'll take it. I said that I'll sort it all and have the receipts to him on Tuesday when I come to pick up the $500 in cents.

His computer was down, so he was never able to open my account. I left his office with the whole cooler's worth of coins. A 5 gallon bucket was filled from the cooler, and then I rolled the rest of the coins out to my car via the cooler. I could barely lift either load.

Yesterday, I had no good source of cents without paying a fee. Today, I've got a standing order for $500 a week with no fee, a huge pile of coins to search, a new bank to do business with, tellers that already know my name, and I'm helping out a charitable organization.

My week began bad, but it is now much better. It pays to be persistent and honest.

Great story. Really enjoyed reading this. Hope you find some good ones. I'd be interested to know if you find some silver coins.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Damn sweet score! Great storytelling to boot! Congrats on the find. Honesty certainly pays off.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

Nice score. Money does indeed talk sometimes. Congratulations.

Very nice score! but be careful, no fee's on $500 a week might only be temporary for a few months if it starts becoming a hassle to them.

Were the charity coins all pennies? or was it a mix of different denominations?

The coins are a mix of everything from Q, D, N, and cents to tokens, foreigns, poker chips, and other misc. stuff. I've been finding a bunch of Philippines coin.

A few Canadian nickels, 1 silver canadian quarter, 1 war nickel, and 1 1962 dime so far. But there is still so much more to search.

I'd rather not disclose my new source bank. A guy who finds treasure should keep it a secret

I'm glad folks liked the story. I'll post an update once everything is counted.

Congrats MH! Sounds like the beginning of a good banking relationship. My whole family has accounts at one bank, including a few business accounts, and we know almost everybody at the branch closest to our town. I'm thinking about asking them for pennies...

Great score.

I seem to be going the other way. Nah not really. Just having a hard time finding 'peek-a-boo' boxes.

It's nice to find a bank that actually appreciates their customers instead of them acting like we are bothering them everytime we walk in.

You did the labor and handling, so its absolutely fair. Coinstar charges 8%, you credit 0.75%.

That is extremely fair. You, my friend, are lucky that that is what the total came out to be. It would have been awkward to have it come out to be something like $978, and give him something, but it not come out to be $1000 even. Now, you can pitch in a little under eight dollars for the good finds and the enjoyment of searching. Great find, and congrats.

A few extra bucks to be in good with the bank manager and the tellers will remember you and be on the lookout for you. It is a win-win for everyone.

Now they know who to call to dump their unwanted coins on.
