Last few batches of nickels gave me 6.5% return in .999 Nickel.
I see that my percentage is dropping fast, with all the money, time and effort that I put in finding these I wonder if is still worth it?
What percentage will make you stop searching? 10%, 5%, 3%, 1% return rate or never?

I got 8.5% from the last box I did and I thought that was pretty disappointing compared to the 20% I used to get, although I did find a 1939 george vi and a 1940 jefferson which was nice. I'm focusing more of my attention on pennies and dimes these days. I get a good ratio of copper and old stuff with the pennies and I'm happy if I can find a silver dime per $100-250 sorted (<0.1%).
In answer to your question I think it depends a lot on the alternatives available and the metal value of the coin. I hand sort largely for entertainment and the nickels don't seem to really be worth it for me these days. |

I'm also in the US and I very rarely ever find anything good.
But, the thoughts of there always being a possibility of finding something keeps me going. This is an inexpensive, enjoyable hobby for me.

Sorting US cents still has some appeal. I have been skunked on halves enough times I don't even go there, but on rare occassions.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ. |
