Just wanted to show you guys my latest pickup. I think? I got one heck of a deal here but just wanted some opinions on it. Not 100% sure of the condition but its gold right? Just wondering how you would grade it and how much it might be worth. I know how much its worth in gold but is it worth more than just gold?? Thanks for any help guys!!

Scotty

If you look at the reverse of the coin you can see the damage from being in that bezel. Look just to the right of dollars. Im sure there are also other damage spots from the bezel. If not for the damage I would say around $1300, but because of the damge im afraid its only worth its gold content, or just a hair more. In my opinion....

Yeah, I noticed that after I got it to the house and removed it from the bezel. That was very unfortunate but really didn't matter a whole lot to me about the condition just was sad to see that on the coin figured it was worth quite a bit if not for that. I picked it up for under gold spot so no worries there.

Nice pick up either way!

Without the damaged edge, I would grade this coin VF-20. Hair worn about ear, and lower half of prongs on the crown are worn flat.

Silver is "real money" and has been for thousands of years.

Here is an idea-
put it back in thebezel.
If coin collectors turn their noses up at it for being a piece of jewelry, Turn it back into a beautiful piece of jewelry.
There is more than one market for that coin.

(Didn't know you had a bezel for it.)

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

nice pick up bro. Personally, I favor the gold indians. Loved the design on those, and would have loved to see the include technique used on modern coinage.

But these are still good too, even though I dont have any of the double eagles.

If I was you I would check the bezel for gold markings like 14k, 10k, .585 etc. because coin bezels tend to be gold as well. If theres no markings get it tested. By the looks of it could be worth $30-75.

The bezel is 3 grams of 14k gold so I believe at todays spot thats worth roughly 55.00. Geeze didn't even consider it might be worth that much, figured maybe 4-6.00 at most. Now I'm stating even better. The guy offered the coin way under value and I jumped on it. He said he had 6 people call him trying to set up a meeting and said first come first served. I jumped in my truck and drove 1 hr 15 min to his house. He sat there and weighed the coin and bezel with me on his scale and then my scale and seemed like he knew what he was doing. Only problem was he only wanted 800.00 for the coin and bezel. He said a pawn shop offered him 700.00 for it and he figured he could get more for it on craigslist like he had done in the past. Hummm....

You got that for $800??? WOW....nice score Scotty!! Although pre-1933 gold coins have cooled off some recently according to dealers around here, you still got one heck of a deal.

I have to differ with ya on the grade. Look at the crown and you will see the wear - It's only a VF-20 coin at best.
