We search copper pennies high and low. Some much more than others. You think maybe a simple plan to collect unopened boxes of sealed pennies may be a patient person's way to collect on the premiums that pennies may get many years down the road? I am playing devil's advocate here but it looks like sealed rolls of pennies on a site like Ebay command a nice premium. Of course sealed rolls from 2009, unless they are the 2009 Lincoln series cents, probably don't get much interest to bidders. The idea is to store the pennies for 30 years and collect a nice premium on sealed rolls that may contain who knows what for the collectors 30 years from now. A fifty cent roll of pennies going for $5.00? Possible if the penny is gone and the majority of zinc and copper cents are melted down. The problem is to store the pennies and tie up your capital for years in the coins. Also, who knows what markets will be like in 30 years? It does seem like a very simple thing to do. I am doing it with any boxes of BU nickels I come across actually.

You have to think of the saying, “What isn’t rare today won’t be rare tomorrow”. You are taking a risk betting that numismatics will be a strong hobby, and that there will be any interest in your rolls from now on. Is there really that much a premium today for unopened copper rolls from 1979? Maybe a few times face but you lost a lot more than that to inflation.

I have some of those 30-year old copper rolls; put 'em away in 1980 during the great silver boom. I have no idea what's in them. I don't think they are worth any more than the coppers you are finding today. The old adage, "Do it in moderation" is true because you have to be willing to tie up the money you put in copper for a long time. Even then, despite your hope of great profit, it may not come to fruition 30 years from now.

A great topic. However, I agree with Greenday. I think that copper pennies, rolled, boxed, or stored in a 55 gallon drum will produce the greatest profit, face value-wise, in 30 years. More so than just buying a Brinks box and holding it because it wouldn't have seen the light of day for 30 years.
