Roll and save for future use. Sell if and when the price gets high enough.

Seriously, don't let anyone kid you. Melting coins is illegal and nobody here does that.

filled my pool and swim in it. Later when it's completely full, I'll cap it with cement. The biggest bullion bar ever.

Lone Star, those here that have pennies are speculating (with good odds IMO) that the price of copper will increase quite a bit,(I think in 10yrs or so) this market (junk copper) will become a market somewhat similar to what we see with "junk silver"

One or both of the following will happen. Commerce will determine there is enough zinc in circulation, maybe for a yr or so the government will keep quiet and slower pull as much copper pennies out of circulation, then they will lift the melt ban.

Or they will once again quietly pull copper pennies out of circulation, announce they are discontinuing the penny... And then lift the melt ban...

Either way its a win win. We can get these at face value, they are already worth more then face value, plus we get to have so much fun aquiring...

If I had a lot of copper pennies I would store them until it became unthinkable not to sell them at a huge profit (or I retire).

1. If the dollar tanks in value (massive inflation) that copper I might be storing will double, triple or 10x its value.
2. If the dollar soars (massive deflation) and money buys more then it does today my pennies would buy a lot more then they do today.
3. If nothing happens with the dollar (stagflation) I'd be sitting on a nice hard savings account. Plus it takes some premeditation to spend a lot of pennies, with the rolling time and all.

But I can't recommend you collect copper pennies. If you collect there will be less for my friends and me to get to feed our crazy obsession.

I re-roll mine and put them back in those penny boxes that the bank gives me. They are a little larger than a brick and store nicely in the basement or under a bed. Another option may be to store them loose in various sized buckets.

I just hoard them all. No plans to sell them.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. I don't sell. I reroll, box them in packages of $75, and put them in my grandparents' basement. Wash, rinse, repeat.

No, collecting copper pennies is a bad idea. It just makes it harder for the regulars here to get their fill.

Oh, but the few that happened to fall out of my change always fell into a couple of kitty litter buckets. But I'm completing a move soon, and I may try to sell them instead of troubling with them in the move.

Eat 'em....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Answering that age old question: What do you do with your copper?

It's simple really!

First, dig a huge hole in a remote area of the country on land you own.

Second, place ten fifty-five gallon plastic drums full of copper pennies in the hole. Cover and plant pine trees around the area.

Third, wait ten years.

Fourth, sell a treasure maps with clues for $19.95 to finding the buried treasure of old copper coins.

Fifth, become famous and go on talk shows and retire with millions....

P.S. If you die before this happen have the treasure map in your will and instruct your estate to publish the map with clues in your local newspaper. LOL At least that way you will die famous!

Cost of Copper Pennies: 15,000 lbs @ 150 pennies to the pound = 2,250,000 pennies or $ 22,500.
Sorting Time, Equipment, supplies and dumping: your milage will vary
Truck and Forklift - those drums are going to be heavy. Rent truck and forklift for a day: $1000.
Excavator Rental: $1000 - and you have to do this yourself because if you hire someone to do the digging they will just come back and reverse the job.
Pine Trees: $500
Newspaper Ads, designing and printing maps and order fullfillment: $500
Lost profit on pennies over 10 years: $1 Million
Lawyer to rewrite will: $250

Total Cost: $1,025,750

Revenue from sale of first map to a guy with a big metal detector: $19.95
Loss: $1,025,730.05

Amusement from reading and rebutting the plan: Priceless!

Lost profit on pennies over 10 years: $1 Million. LOL

What rate of return are you figuring for an investment of $22,500 for 10 years?

Show me the figures on this?
