Depends on how shiny they are.
$25 of copper pennies only, or rolled in a box?
Usually if you figure about 150 per pound it will get you close. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

2500 copper pennies times 3.1 grams per penny roughly = 7750 grams
7750 grams divided by 454 grams per pound (avoirdupois) = 17.07 pounds

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

| I did a little experiment the other day, and I found an average of 145 copper pennies per pound and an average of 188 zinc pennies per pound. |

Just be careful with the 145. A mint-fresh copper with no wear weighs 3.11 grams, so it would take 145.85 (146 for all practical purposes) completely perfect pennies to make a pound. With normal wear from circulation, it takes a little more. I just did a quick test with a scale I have that is accurate to 0.01 grams, and it took 147-148 average pennies to hit a pound. I typically just use 150 for quick estimations. For buying/selling I go by the weight anyway; no need to count that way
