My guess is that it is counterstamped with the 12/31/74 on it as a rememberance for something on that date and perhaps they gold plated it somewhere that did the counterstamping, ie for a golden wedding anniversary, etc. BUT, this is just random speculating on my part. I would definitely keep it, for no other reason that it's a cool "gee whiz, look what I've found" coin. |

I have a gold-plated 1974. I labored for a long time under the belief that it was a rare test clad variety (the mint was experimenting like crazy that year), and did a lot of research on the subject, before finally talking to an expert in error coins (You must be logged in to see this link.), who said it was most likely just gold-plated. A mass spectrometer confirmed this. |

I agree with Nate. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the date. Strange that it would be for that year, and not the Bicentennial just 365 days later... |

I just got one today from some girl that used it to pay for her food.
12-31-74 is the day FDR's ban on private ownership of gold ended.
Yes I know the thread is old, Google can point you in odd places.
Hope this helps someone some day. |

I did a frustrating internet search (I HATE COMPUTERS!!!) and found a link to someone posting on another coin forum that they found a 1961 penny that had been done the same way--gold plated and the 12/31/74. |
