well, at 8:30 p.m. tonight we had a 5.0 earthquake in los angeles county. lennox to be exact. 15 miutes later there was a 3.?? aftershock which we didn't feel. we live in lakewood, ca. ourselves. my family in orange county felt it. my family in pedro felt it. to me it felt first like a rolling quake followed by a strong sturdy jolt. my dh was with our dd in the bedroom playing a game. he said the tv went blank and then the quake hit. when i first felt the quake i got up to get my dd, just in case.

when i got to the room it was still rolling. when it jolted that's when dh grabbed dd off the bed and we ran to the middle of the house. he stood under an archway without swinging doors. i stood in the living room waiting to see what happened next. after that we all put on our shoes to be on the safe side. we took our dd outside because she asked to go outside. our neighbor and two of his ds were there with him. they did not have their shoes on.

this is our dd's third quake. her 2nd quake happened back in april 23, 09. the day jay leno was hospitalized.

This brings up an interesting issue as far as storing preps in areas that would be more accessible (but still secure) in the event of a natural disaster. I've thought a lot about what to store or not store in certain parts of the house for the sake of accessibility and safety--for example, storing food in an area close to an outside wall or other easily-accessible area might be good in the event of an earthquake (assuming gas and electricity are shut off), while ammo or combustible materials such as certain fuel or cleaning materials should always be kept in fireproof or otherwise appropriate containers that could prove especially important in the event of certain disasters. The Midwest is prone to tornadoes, so storing certain things in the basement might be more preferable than if we were more earthquake-prone here (although we had a 5.2-magnitude quake in April 2008).

So, since natural or manmade disasters could affect our preps and our storage methods should be adapted to certain things depending on where we live, what are each of you doing in terms of safe storage methods or locations depending on your part of the country, common types of disasters where you live, etc.?

Caridad, hopefully everyone is ok?

This should prove to you that it would be a good idea to keep some supplies on hand, like a weeks worth of food and water. A quake, even a minor one could disrupt water supply very easily, electricity as well.

Question, what do dd and ds stand for?

yes, we're all ok. my emergency pack is in the backyard. that way if the house drops out of existence we still have our resources to fall back on.

My basement is poured in place concrete below ground with the first floor on grade with wood construction floors and masonry brick outside walls. If there was a good size earthquake in my area, the brick structure would fail first and my whole place "could" come crashing down into the basement where all my preps are, one thing I was thinking about doing, was to reinforce the first floor structure with a series of large beams and columns supplemental to the existing structure to increase the available loading on the first floor, so in theory the house would collapse onto the first floor and the basment would remain intact for the most part. As long as I wasn't in the house when it collapsed I could gain access to the basement through the outside bulkhead door.

the funny thing about this earthquake was i mentioned to a couple of co-workers where i was temping that i had started my earthquake prep in feb. one lady said jokingly, "give us your address. when the big one hits we can go to your house and rob you."

I didn't hear about a Quake in LA. I guess it wasn't important enough news.

A quake in LA is like a tornado in the Midwest--they happen all the time but only the bad ones make the news.
