Chief,
You're right. No sense giving up, but I think one of the locals has figured it out. You know it's a bad situation when you ask for halves and the teller says "how many would you like?" with a very hopeful tone in his voice. If they have more than one or two rolls next time I will discriminate between the ones I want and the ones I don't. |

Well, sometimes you get lucky. Wasn't me this time, but a good buddy just called to tell me about his good fortune with half dollars yesterday. He was doing his regular bank runs for halves and pennies and went into one bank that he hadn't been into for a little while. The teller spotted him right away and said "I've been waiting for you to come in, I have something for you." She had a plastic bank bag with $55 in half dollars for him. Wanna guess what his silver percentage was? 100%!!! All 110 halves in the bag were 40% silver! I would say that is a good way to start your day of bank runs. |

In NC all summer for work. I stopped by a bank in cherokee and asked for halves. "how many would you like?" caught my off guard. ummmm $100 I said. Long story short, they were all hand wrapped with various wrappers. Skunked on the lott. here in greensborrough (sp?) for a week, will try my luck here. |

Often when the bank has a lot of CRW halves, I will only buy a few. Then I open them in the parking lot and if they are good I go back in and buy the whole lot. |

My best haul was 90 in crw that was 100% silver. I only had $80 on me and had to scrape up $10 in change to buy the other roll. I should have asked if the guy had brought in other change at the same time. However, I was uneducated in the art of prospecting back then. I don't remember what the % was, but a lot of them were franklins and 1964's. I figured that there was 40-50 oz ASW in them, so they must have been mostly 90%. |

That is a fantastic haul! One of those will help keep you positive through a lot of skunkings. My best haul so far was at Christmas when the Silver Santa visited me. Got 6 CWR and out of that 99 were silver. I think it was 81 90% and 18 40%. |

That is an outstanding haul. Good fortune smiled upon you. |

Did some silver mining in northern Wisconsin this past week and found 11 40% halves and 1 90% half out of $600 face. Some banks told me of a guy going thru the area looking for halves about a month ago. I also picked 7 40% halves from 50 cent slot machines from a nearby Indian casino. I did not play the machines, just put $100 in and cashed out the halves. I even had the slot attendants offering extra buckets to me for my sorting. |

the one with the swimmer on it is the rarest, lists for $170 in ms 65, the soccer is $90,baseball is $23 and the basketball is $23. starting to wonder if times are so desperate that people are spending commem's as money or maybe my coin is stolen. i'd love to know how it got in circulation. |

I got a columbian half a while back.... I think it was in a $500 bag from the bank machine.
It was in XF condition.. worth $8-14 I'd say.
It was the oldest. That would be awesome to find a Barber half. ANyone? |

Went to my bank and asked for $300 in halves yesterday and found my best silver find ever. All of the halves were loose in a bag that the tellers had to count out by hand. I don't like it when they count them by hand because it gives the tellers a chance to pick out the silver. But I guess the tellers working that day did not look at the dates. I found, 5 Franklins, 3 90% JFK's and 12 40% JFK's! I could'nt believe it. My first handfull of halves that I pulled out of the bag had a Franklin resting right on top. I'll be cashing the clads in at my credit union and going back to get as many halves as I can get today. |

That is a sweet find.
I was in a BofA buying halves a couple of weeks ago and while I'm asking the teller I could see the coins she had in her coin tray. I could see an Ag sitting right at the top. Feeling pretty good as she says yes I have $7... Then she says, no I only have $6.50 as put the top coin aside. What a let down.

Went to a Speedway gas station to buy a .79 drink and paid with two halves today. The Cashier went crazy and said 'if you have anymore we have a guy who buys them'. So I went to the car and gave the clerk $60 worth the clad and she was happy as a clam. I think I found a new way to buy gas! This goes with some posts about this topic a while back.
I think I may try again but write '1969' or some interesting dates and words to get them to buy more. lol |

Last year I was heading west down the road stopping at the banks. The first bank said a man had called in and was coming to get all of the halves. They wouldn't sell me any. The next four banks said that a man had just stopped by and gotten all they had. He was heading east doing the same thing and had a half hour jump on me.
At the last bank. the man had been thereand cleaned them out also. However the teller at the end said "I have one" I looked at it 1912 barber Whoever it was got a ton of halves, but I a pretty sure that I got the best one. |

Did some more half dollar hunting here in Wilmingtom NC today. got a small ammount ($60)from RBC bank and nothing. Also asked at a wachovia and the teller said "have you seen all the coin shops? We have alot of sorters around here." I did however find 2 2004- one P and one D- in some halves that I got in greensborrough. Since I have been in NC: No silver. Can't wait to be back home in Alabama! Where they at least have 40%ers |
