Out of $500, one 1968. The box could have been worse I suppose.

Today I searched $300 in dimes, $300 in halves, $300 in quarters, and $300 in nickels.

Much to my surprise, I found no silver from the halves, dimes, or nickels, but I did find a silver quarter from 1945. My first silver quarter this year!

Got $36.50 in halves at the bank today. Found 3 40%ers.. more than tex got out of a whole box! Much better than the $400 in dimes I did yesterday and only found 1 silver.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Got a roll of half dollars at the bank today.. from the same teller that gave me my early Christmas present. Was all excited and sorted them out in the car. Nope, no revisits from the Silver Santa.. see picture above.

There are a few of us who frequent this one thread. And, although I do not derive pleasure from another's misfortune, at least I am not the only one to get skunked on halves. Nice skunk Fiatboy.

Curious -- do any of you have information regarding a national average or anything similar for finding silver in a box of halves? For pennies, I know very well that I will average about 20% copper in searching boxes in Texas. But, I am unaware of any such percentages anywhere for searching halves. Have any of you run across such information in other "coin" forums? Please let me know if you have.

It used to be a standard of 1 40% per every 4 rolls/$40 searched from the members at the Kitco forums, but that seems like its very outdated and near impossible to achieve.

I think it varies too widely to be consistant like pennies. Sometimes you can do hundreds and hundreds without a single keeper.. and sometimes the Silver Santa visits you <G>

My experience has been like HoardCopper's. I have had more skunkings that I can to admit, but I once collected 27 40%ers out of one box.

Searched thru $140 in halves and found 4 1968-D's.

40% halves....1.42%
90% halves....0.00%

I plan on reporting percentages from now on. My guess is that they will be no higher than 2% or 3%.

Two or three years ago I bought a roll of halves at the bank - I think we did get one 40% Kennedy. Afterwards we started to spend the rest of them. We tried to spend a few when we went to Arby's for lunch, and the girl behind the counter raised a big ruckus. I guess she had never seen a half dollar before, and thought we were trying to pull a fast one.

Searched $640 in halves and found just 1 40% half, .078%

With silver way up I'm finding fewer and fewer halves.

How do you get rid of your halves? Bring them to the bank across the block or back to the bank you got them from. I also like to here about silver in halves.

A buddy of mine has been buying approx. $2K in Halves a week for the last 10 yrs or so and has one hell of a hoard. He is waiting for silver to hit $25 which he was told by one of the larger dealers around her it is assured.I know his record out of 4 boxes was 36X not sure of the last number but was 360 something. He has the best luck when it comes to coins.Him and his brother bought a jar of Silver from a lady in the mid 90's for Face(all she wanted) and they found a 16-d dime and a 3 leg Buffalo.
He just came up from florida last week and not sure if he's back into the halves yet.I'll have to call and find out.

$550 in halves from 2 different banks searched and found 9 40% halves for a 0.81% of total coins in silver.

At one bank the halves($200) were all loose and they rolled them up for me even though I was'nt a customer and waived a 10 cent per roll charge. As it turned out I got 7 silvers out of those and only 2 silvers from the remaining $350.

At another bank I asked for halves and they said no they do not have any,but without asking the teller asked me if I would like some large dollar coins. I said yes I would and for a few seconds I daydreamed of getting rolls and rolls of real silver dollars at face value. But reality set in quickly and I bought 12 Ikes from her.

Got $34 in halves today.. 3 rolls and 8 loose. I love it when you see the silver band as they hand you the loose ones!

Nothing in the rolls.. but that silver band was a 69-S.. and right next to it was a 97-S!

Did 60 rolls of dimes earlier this week.. Struck silver! 1 silver 46 dime.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
