Since halves hate me, I sort dimes on occasion. I'll go a month or two without searching any, and then on a whim, I'll buy a box if I have extra funds.
I haven't kept any statistics, but I'm guessing that I find silver for every $600 to $700 I search. It sounds like a lot, but dimes are a very fast search. I usually just edge check, since 90% silver stands out so much. Most of the silver I find are 1964's, but I can usually find at least one Merc per year.
Interestingly, although 80% Canadian silver dimes are pretty rare, I've found quite a few 50% silver Canadian dimes--4 so far this year. |

Yesterday I got my best group of halves ever. Out of $60 worth of halves I got 99 silver halfs and only 16 of them were 40%ers.. the rest were 90% Walkers, Franklins and 64 Kennedys. Also got a 1955 British Half Crown which appears to have some silver in it.
This certainly made this a very Merry Christmas! Usually when I ask for half dollars the bank never has any. |

| I came home for the holiday, visiting the family and all---and I got to visit coincollector101. We went coin roll hunting today, and aside from all the pennies we got, we also nabbed 5 40%ers and one 90%. We also found the elusive $20 Ike roll. And 11 cents from coinstar. The banks closed early, lots of silver skunks, but we had a blast. Can't wait to sort those pennies! |

| Went back to the same bank and got all the rolls of halves they had, another $280 and found 5 40% halves. This bank is near a casino so I went in to see if they had half dollar slot machines. They had a few left, so I got 10 rolls from the cashier to look thru and every single one was a 2000-p half dollar. Has anyone had much luck finding silver at a casino? |

One last search for silver halves in 2007 was a rotton one. I went to a bank in a small town about 25 miles away that said they had about $200 in half dollars. I picked up $160 in halves and showing on quite a few of the ends of the rolls were tarnished looking coins. I could not wait to rip those babies open. They all ended up just being worn,dirty clads that had some rainbow toning.
Oh well, I thought I might get what HCBTT got before Christmas.
I've been having fairly good luck hitting the small town banks for silver halves and hope to hit quite a few more in 2008. |

| My last box was pretty uneventful, one Franklin and two 67s. But, the coin counter return was interesting. I returned my halves to a bank with a free coin counter today. The counter was knocking and making racket so I had the clerk open the top for me so I could clean out obstructions -- which usually means foreign coins that the counter will not accept. Sure enough, I found One Canadian dollar, a Canadian quarter (not silver), two Canadian nickels (both 100% nickel), and, believe it or not, 4 British pounds stirling. The pound is slightly larger than a nickel in circumference and twice as thick as a nickel. Pretty neat coin. |

| Today I got one of the those 40% silver halves that has an edge like a post-'70 half. After edge-checking the stack, I almost didn't check the dates---glad I did, or that 1967 half would've got away. |

| Yeah, I have come close to missing some of those 40%ers too. After I do the edge check I always check the dates just to be sure. Got a call from one of my banks this morning. They have $230 in halves and $100 in pennies for me to pick up on Friday. |

| I stopped at another casino this morning that still had some half dollar slot machines and did some silver mining. They had a bank of 12 machines and I put $200 into each machine and then hit the cash out button right away. I found 17 40% halves by doing this. The best take from 1 machine was 5 40% halves. I thought the casino would catch on to what I was doing and ask me to leave, but nobody said a thing, not even after the 6 times I had to wait for a new fill of halves to complete the pay out. I think the cashier was wondering why I kept re-cashing in $200 each time. The worst part was the low lighting to see the dates. Well I won't press my luck and go back this afternoon to the same casino, I'll try to find more casinos with half dollar machines nearby as alot are now the coinless ticket-in,ticket-out machines. |

Last box was great! 27 40%ers. My best vein of silver so far. Also, two 2006s and an AU bicentennial.
Regarding edges, most all of the 40%ers I see have edges that are very similar to the post 70 halves, especially when very dirty. I date check everything. I am especially hoping to find a 1987. Those were not circulated and I have yet to find one. |

| I searched $100 in dimes and found three silvers---1946, 1960, and 1964. I've had great luck with dimes recently and plan to step up my searching. |

Wish there was a casino near me that had real half dollars. All the ones around here are TITO. I love that method of just putting in your money and then cashing out. Have you tried going up to the cashier and seeing if they will sell you $500 worth like you need them to play the machine?
Sorted the 23 rolls of halves I got today. No return visits from the Silver Santa this week. Don't you just hate it when you see a little mark on the outside of the rolls that probably indicates they have already been searched.. but you have to open each roll anyway.. just in case? Did get 1 extra half dollar in one of the rolls and found a handful of nice BU's. Maybe I will have better luck with the 40 rolls of dimes I picked up today. |

1 1962 Ben Franklin
1 1968-d 40%
1 2004-d
1 1976 gold? plated half
I thought this was going to be a dud of a search untill the Franklin was found in the 3rd last roll!

I've never had the good fortune of finding plentiful silver halves, but keep looking. I try to pick up a few rolls when my friendly banker has some available. My silver average must be about one 40 percenter for each $100 searched. Hardly spectacular, but I keep thinking that somewhere there's a full roll of walkers just waiting for me. (Now, if I was really nuts, I say that I fully expected a roll of Barber halves!)
In the bigger picture, though, I try to spend as many as I can throughout daily transactions. It's a hoot to see how many people still beileve that the clad JFKs are something akin to finding the Lost Dutchman Mine. I've been the cause of servers in a couple restuarants scrapping with each other over whose turn it was to get the half dollars I left for a tip. Oh well, it's entertainment 50 cents at a time. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

Two things, great name, and you should consider yourself lucky that they even know what they are. Usually people look then re-look to see what they are.

While cashing in the halves at my bank, one of the tellers said she had a few halves she saved for me. They were 3 more 40% halves!

| That is a good afternoon Hirbonzig; a good silver haul especially off $300. I don't know what my average is, but I bet it runs about 3 silvers to the box. Sometimes I get pretty good results, but I have been skunked many times. Reality set back in on my last box -- 1 Benjamin and 1 40%er. I have a new box coming tomorrow. |

| Had a great time showing off some of my silver halves and telling my Silver Santa story at coin club tonight. One of my buddies there had an even better Silver Santa story than me. He went to his credit union and the teller told him he had $80 worth of silver dollars for him. He figures, OK 4 rolls of Ikes, sure he wants them. He opens up the 4 rolls and only 14 of the coins are Ikes. The rest are real silver dollars.. Morgans and Peace dollars! One was even a CC dollar in low grade! So keep hitting up those banks, you never know what may turn up. |

Holy cow!! I got to ask more tellers around town to be on the lookout for pre 1971 halves,pre 1965 dimes and quarters and large silver dollars for me. |
