For those of us who don't have a regular coin ship business, or huge hoards of copper pennies, or are 'very small' hoarders, having only a couple or three hundred rolls of copper 1940-1981 (or less), what suggestions are there for selling them? Is eBay a reasonable choice?
Thanks

Sheba, I would suggest you try to sell them here first in our Market forums. No fees and though many here may be doing the same thing you are in sorting, there are many who come here who don't want to take the time to do so but want to hold on to copper coins for the long term. |

What, did the heat sealer break down?
If the market heats up much more, I might just have to dip a toe back in the market. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| my concern is that now that copper prices have gone up, hoarders will be coming out of the wood work and snatching up the copper that I should be getting. |

Tips to make you need a cart: 1) Always preorder. 2) Act like it's not a big deal to order a significant number of boxes. 3} Ask for your "standard order" of 24 boxes.. if they can't fill that, maybe they will offer to get you 12.. or 8. 4} Take whatever they offer.. a little every week can add up, and you might be able to bump the order in the future. 5) Always be there at the agreed upon time to pick up your order.. no excuses. 6) More Banks.. Bigger Banks 7) Develop a relationship with the vault teller. You want to be that person's bestest friend.. always taking CWR whenever they have it in, so they never have to ship. Chocolate never hurts either. 8) Spread your action around.. it is much easier get a good # of boxes if you are picking up at 15 or 20 branches. 9) Get that cart.. you will need it. The goal is to get in and out quickly with your pennies so you are a minimal disruption to normal bank businees. |

I have been buying sorted coppers so some of the wheats were pulled by those I bought from. I saw a few go through, but not many. I got one upset email from a customer that purchased a few bags and looked through for wheats expecting to get lots. I don't even have any pictures of wheats or mentions of wheats on my website, but the customer claimed that the date range on the package (1909-1982) meant there should be wheat pennies in the package. I just did a run of packaging and updated the date range to 1959-1982 to hopefully avoid that kind of thing in the future. I will be updating the photos shortly.
I sell the 5-pound bags for $17.95, or as low as $16.95 in quantity (10+ bags). I sell the 1-pound bags for $3.95, or as low as $3.75 in quantity. |

The heat sealer is fine, there just aren't enough hours in the day
Now that I'm done with classes for the summer, I'm beginning to work on a sorter and a system to make removing the uglies easier, since that is the most time consuming part. |

I take into consideration what the copper costs me, the time it takes to sort out the uglies, the time it takes to weigh and package, the cost of the bag and card, and the amount I would like to make on it.
You can figure on approximately 150 pennies per pound. |

Thanks very much for the suggestion, Ardent Listener. That's a much better suggestion than my thought about eBay. I'll keep that in mind as my hoard grows. I'm presently just sorting a few rolls at a time...a nice, relaxing hobby! Have found a few wheaties and one 1943 steelie (but no Indians or '1922 no D' .... as yet ). I'm getting about 25 - 35% copper per roll.
Thanks again.

I know what you mean.. there are not enough hours in the day for me either. I didn't even get through the 53 boxes I picked up this week.. and didn't touch the 24 bags of copper I picked up from another local sorter.. or the 7500 coppers that showed up at the PO box Saturday.
I know what you mean about how time consuming "removing the uglies" or as I call it, "refining" is. I am a few tons behind on that too. |
