Coppers are 3.1 grams and zincs are 2.5 i got my scale from a coin shop but made the mistake of getting a postal scale before (not precise enough) so be sure that it measures to .1 g before you get one. Hope this helps! PM me if needed....

I just flip the 1982 cents, if it "rings" it's copper and if it has no "ring"(sounds dead) it's zinc.

Bounce then on a wooden cutting board.
You'll hear the difference between 95% CU and 95% Zn!

Some suggest putting a popsicle stick on a pencil and then using a known copper as a weight on one end. I just let my Ryedale figure it out.

I bought one from e-bay for less than $10. Works fine. I have a Ryedale. I use it to weigh silver coins.

The silver dime and the wheat I found in my backyard with the metal detector weigh 2.3g ( Dime) and 2.9g ( wheat )

That should be about right since there is wear on both.

Yeah, I got one cheap on ebay for like $10 and is accurate down to .01 grams. I am starting to get used to the weight difference between the zinc/copper coins and can usually tell the difference just by holding it on my figertip. I still use the scale though for confirmation.

There is a contest to win a cheap little digital scale in the contest forums.

I will also be making a new listing for a nice Ohaus digital scale in the seller section along with a few cheaper brands of scales later today.
