For all coins but pennies, the metal arrives at the Denver Mint on huge spools that are fed into a machine that punches out coins like a cookie cutter. Pennies come to the mint pre-cut.

Yeah, your probably right I did not think about copper plated zinc. I wonder if that same process was used for pre-1982 copper pennies.

The article does say that pennies come to the mint precut. So,this copper has to be for the other coins.

When I visited the RCM in Winnipeg I saw these types of rolls. They have a lot of steel, but also other metals for various customer (other country) coins. It was pretty cool - and those rolls are pretty heavy. Nice pic.
