I went to a local flea market and picked up a 1879 Morgan dollar for $14, 1856 Seated Half, 1858-O Seated half, and a 1876-S Seated Half. Paid $14 for the morgan and $8 on the halves. They were in shabby shape and werent key dates by any means, but I weighed them and they were mega short when I got home. The halves were 9 grams each and the morgan was 19 grams. The halves were even made before the weight change in silver as well.
I should have knew better, and know it is a lesson learned. The coin dealer said they may have came from China. Not too happy right now. Becareful guys!

I will try to add some pictures soon. I just assumed that all four coins were collectively buried somewhere, hence a dark-grey color. The details are there, but are wron rounded. I noticed something was up when put next to a slick barber half that the barber weighed more, yet had less detail.
But $38 is a cheap way to schooled in the world of Numis. coins. |

| That sucks....I just found out that I unknowingly sold a fake Trade Dollar to a lady on another coin forum. She was cool about it and was surprised it came back from ANACS as such. Everything looked good, and the weight was appropriate so I dont know what they saw that made them rule this way. Oh well...gotta be careful in this field. |

all those older coins are counterfeited pretty heavily. Therefore, I do my best to stay away from them, even though I do like morgan dollars. Specs on counterfeited older coinage. A scale can come in REAL handy when purchasing these coins, although I think there's some sophisticated counterfeits out there that mimic the weight of the real coin pretty well, and are actually silver.
Coin Type: Counterfeit Seated Liberty Half Dollar - .50¢ Genuine Weight: 12.4 grams Metals: 90% Silver & 10% Copper ----------------------------------------------------- Counterfeit’s Weight: 9.2 grams
Coin Type: Counterfeit Silver Morgan Dollar - $1.00 Genuine Weight: 26.73 grams Metals: 90% Silver & 10% Copper ----------------------------------------------------- Counterfeit’s Weight: 19.4 grams
Coin Type: Counterfeit Silver Trade Dollar - $1.00 Genuine Weight: 27.2 grams Metals: 90% Silver & 10% Copper ----------------------------------------------------- Counterfeit’s Weight: 24.6 grams

| I've been told again and again.... the trade dollars are the ones to look out for! The counterfeits can be done EXTREMELY WELL! IT has been estimated that half of the Trade Dollars out there are counterfeit. I guess they could even get by the grading companies... but not likely. Buy Graded on the Trade dollars! that is my two cents. |

A coin dealer near me had a Trade Dollar for sale but said he wasn't sure if it was a copy or not.
Fake coins intended to fool collectors were just as much a problem 100 years ago as they are today. If I read correctly, even back in the days of Ancient Rome coins were counterfieted to decieve coin collectors of long long ago.

I change with the times- but like silver coins found in your change I stay the same. ***************** The United States of America started out as the new Republic of Rome.

At the Cincy coin show there was one dealer who had counterfeit coins from the 4th century B.C. I thought it was fascinating. |

| Don't feel too bad. Counterfeit coins, once identified, are actually worth Numismatic value also :) Honestly, there is a market for known counterfeit coins, so don't throw them away! |

I don't know for certain that these are being counterfeited; however, I do know that some of our collectible coins are counterfeited ALONG WITH the graded slabbed holder. So, just a word of caution. |
