I bought some dimes of off an Ebay seller. He claims that they are BU but I've noticed that in some cases the edges are tarnished. I wanted to get some insight before I complained.
Thanks,
Theo

| Edges being tarnished might be a result of edge handling without gloves. If the coin shows hairline scratches under magnification, that's a possible sign. If it has an un-natural sheen to it, that's a possible sign. If the fields are nice and clean, but the details (say stars or motto) have dirt around them, that could be a sign. If you're able to post pics or a link to the auction, we might be able to help you more. |

Cases? Are they slabbed?
I think BU is thrown around way too much, but people use it because people may have different definitions for it.
I believe BU would mean Blast white uncirculated. At least to me it does. Would love to see some pics, I actually like some patina to coins. It gives it character. |

| AU=About Uncirculated, BU=Brilliant Uncirculated, UNC=Uncirculated, there are other terms but those are the most used. Honestly, judge for yourself. Even PCGS and NGC are not reliable IMHO you need to know what to look for. READ! |
As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

The subject of a cleaned coin is very difficult. This really depends on what was done to coin for what some say is a cleaned coin. Many so called cleaned coins have gone through high ranking grading services and not been detected. A dealer I know has done this. He will purposely clean a coin, send it in for grading and it comes back graded and slabbed. Many others have sent in coins they thought were never cleaned and they come back cleaned. The degree of cleaning, method of cleaning, material used for cleaning, etc. is very extensive and various. Some would even say a dip in Acetone constitutes cleaning. Others state that is dipping and not cleaning. Back to your coins. Again, terminology. You stated tarnished. Or could those just be the start of toning? Again, the word tarnishing to some is similar to corroding and toning is just the natural ageing of a coin. If only the edges are showing a toning effect, this would be normally due to exposure to the air and not encased in a rigidly enclosed capsule. A coin could well be BU or what is now called MS with all types of toning. If you check out such web sites as the Toned Coin forum, you would encounter numerous coins graded as high as possibly MS-67 and show extensive toning. To sum up this unnecessarily long reply, I would suspect your coins are just toning. No big problem. |

| I agree with Carl on the toning issue. If these coins were kept in the original paper roll for any extended period, the end coins and edges can begin to tone. This will leave the interior coins on the obverse and reverse BU, while the edges are toned. I have seen this many times when I used to collect original rolls of coins. |
