Recently a relative died. Going through the house they found several coffee cans, bottles and other containers with coins, and several handfuls of wrapped cents. I stepped up and offered to sort and count it and pay cash for the value, which would most likely be more than the face value.
Most wanted to just turn them into the bank and count it and be done.
They all agreed. Most of the coins were from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. The only silver was one Morgan looking silver ounce.
Lastly I did the cents. In $15 rolls of cents about half were wheat ears, the other half were coppers and one roll was split between 1943 steel and Indian head cents.
This was the first time in my sorting I found any Indian heads, and only one roll before had I found a roll with no zincs.
The face value ended up being $174.75 I gave them $300. More than the bank would give them. It was really fun remembering.
I removed the few zinc cents and repackaged the whole lot and they are in my basement now. With any luck when I die someone else will go through it all again.

| Have you checked the copper and zinc for errors? This may have been why they were saved. |

This is exactly where "wild" indians (escaped indians) come from, and why we keep finding interesting and old coins. |

Sorry about the loss of your family member, but I am glad that you were able to convince everyone to let you search through the coins. I am sure it was a conflicting time in that you were reliving memories of the lost family member, yet creating happy new memories as you searched these coins.
Just today I decided to put aside three special coins that I have in my possession with a handwritten note for my son so that when something happens to me, he will know why these coins were special--not just old. And, perhaps, he will decide to keep them rather than just sell them at a coin shop.
Enjoy. |
