A fairly large percentage of my silver is in Peace and Morgan dollars. The premium over spot for these is obviously higher than other forms of silver bullion because of the collector/numismatic value. My question is, is it better to buy pure 10 ounce bars and one ounce rounds, or numismatic silver like Morgans in the long run? I imagine if someone had hoarded bust dollars 120 years ago, their children would be very wealthy, whereas if they only hoarded silver, it would not have gone up very much compared with inflation.

i like the angle but it depends on your time frame and risk tolerance.
an ASE has a $4 premium, which is 33% at $12 silver.
a morgan or a peace is worth about $10 at melt. If you buy them for $13.50, that is a nearly equal premium.
of course, 2 years ago premiums on ASE's were about a 1.50.
another way to go is junk silver bags, like halves. historically it sold at a discount to melt. premiums are now $2.50 - $3.00 an ounce. Cheaper than ASE's but still about 20% over spot.
today you can get 1 oz bars for a buck over spot. That is about 8%.
the way to look at this is you have a fixed amount to invest, and do you want to allocate it to silver or the premium? if you compare junk to ASE's, junk is cheaper, its a no brainer unless you think the premium on junk will evaparate before the premium on ASE's. If you compare Morgans to ASE's, its a no brainer as long as you can get them cheaply. If you are paying $20 for morgans, you are really gambling on the numismatic premium. we are entering a long term recession/depression and I don't like that gamble. If you like long shots, buy beanie babies - you can get them very cheap right now.
comparing morgans to junk or morgans to 1 oz bars - I agree with you that there is a potential big upside in morgans. whether you are paying for that depends on what you pay for them. but remember there are a lot of morgans out there.
right now the premiums on small bars is very low, and I like that. junk is not bad in terms of premiums, and if you know what you are doign you can find collectible coins in big bags.
going the opposite way from how you are thinking, with ASE premiums so high, it makes a lot of sense to buy cull morgans and peace dollars since you can get them cheap. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

I buy both Peace and Morgans. Unless spot shoots to the moon you should always get your premium back. Other than that as much as I like the premium bullion, I'm sticking with 10oz bars. They are the best value right now.
10oz Bars, Morgans and Peaces is my main stacking preference right now. If I can't get bars then either 90% or premium. I tend to stay away from generic art bars and rounds, just don't like em.

I like them, but I like to keep my stash diversified. Mine is a mix of 90% dimes, quarters, and halves, Morgans and Peace dollars, 1 oz bars, 5 oz bars, 10 oz bars, and some ASE's and Maples. I like to have a little of everything.
If I can find decent condition (VF or better and problem free) Peace and Morgans for $14 or less, I usually buy them. I dont go after the key dates much though.
So to answer your question, do what you feel is best for you. You can get more silver for your dollar going with generic bars and rounds so if your goal is to get as much silver for your FRN's, then that's the best way to go. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |
