Marked STERLING on the bottom. Asking price was $1.00 for the pair. I didn't haggle on the price. Markings are identical on both STERLING REINFORCED WITH CEMENT 3541 the initials RB in circles.
I assume the cement is for weight? The base is heavy. Probabaly about an ounce or two total silver content if I had to guess. The only way to know for sure would be to remove the bottom and take out the cement. This would destroy them. Anyone have any idea as to a manufacturer, age or what value? Thanks

The enclosed link has some info on buying "weighted" or "cement reinforced" Sterling silver. Great photos of what it looks like before and after. I'm guessing I have around 1 to 1.25 troy oz of .925 sterling silver if I removed the base. Oh well, live and learn. It only cost me a $1.00 so I guess I did ok. They are in great shape with no dents. wish I knew more about them but I can't find any info on the manufacturer. Been searching the I-net for hours. No luck.

Here is another link where you might be able to find what the symbols mean and more info:

I hear you buyingsilvers. I'm not even going to clean them. Weighted silver seems to have limited collectors interest but I have seen some similar items selling in the $20.00 range on ebay. The fact that I can't find any info on mine with the RB markings has heightened my interest. I'm guessing they are less than 50 years old and American made. Other than that, I can't find a thing on them. The RB markings.......... Rogers Brothers? I checked Reed & Barton also but there are no similar hallmarks from either them or Rogers Brothers.

I can't find any additional info on these. Nobody seems to know who, where, when they were made. I've learned that cleaning Sterling service sets is ok and does not affect the value. I'm sure they are not worth much. Probably an EBAY candidate down the road.

You guys are welcome...glad to help out with a useful link. I think there has been some discussion about making a useful URL/link section here on realcent so maybe that's something we should pursue...

We already have a useful link section.
It is at the bottom of the main screen.

Roger's & Bowlen was a sterling manufacturer, now known as Lunt Silver. Lunt got involved in the late 1930's, for awhile the name was RLB "Rogers, Lunt, Bowlen", but was later changed to Lunt which is still in business today.

I am not saying I am 100% certain that yours is by these guys, but it is a possibility.

I have a question on deck with an "all Experts" silver collector who does free silver ID. Will post results when they come in.

UPDATE: I just got an answer from the silver marking expert. She's never seen it before but says the pattern indicates it was made in the 1930's.

Just a heads-up if you want to find pretty good deals on sterling, do searches for sterling compotes on eBay. I've had pretty good luck picking up compotes for about $5-6 per ounce of sterling, but I'm switching to just picking up .999 pieces and 90 percent coins from local dealers and online just because I don't have as much time to research sterling listings these days.

I noticed that as well. Some of the sterling items on ebay are selling way below melt. The problem is, finding someone willing to BUY it from you at or close to melt? Even if you smelted the stuff yoruself, you'd still have to get it assayed. I think silver is assayed by a chemical test. Not sure.

Keep all your sterling pieces intact and sell or trade them for 90 percent or .999 pieces at your local coin dealer. I have yet to talk to a coin dealer who isn't buying sterling. But like I said, keep it in its original form, especially with hallmarks or ".925" or "sterling" markings just so there won't be any question about what you have.

As far as finding good deals with sterling compotes on eBay, the best deals are the ones that have short stems and large bowls--you get the most sterling volume relative to the total size of the compote and less weighting.
