Does anyone here think that common Jefferson Nickels (1960 to 2003) will become as sought after and as valuable as 1938 to 1959 Jefferson Nickels.

Take a look at what they are doing at APMEX: You must be logged in to see this link.

Should I be hoarding them like pennies for future numismatic value (for kids and grandkids) and/or for future metal value or should I just get them to sort for specific types?

I enjoy taking long walks off short piers.

My opinion is no.
Even the 50-D is only about $10 UNC and I have yet to find one in circulation after around $10K in nickels.

It wouldn't hurt to put a few AU away, but I wouldn't hoard these at this point, well unless its for melt value...

The nice thing though is it doesn't cost a lot to speculate on a few of these for the long term...

I just sorted my first nickel box in a year, and didnt keep the 1960-2003 Jeffersons. I kept all 1938-1959, all war nickels of course, and all 2004-2005 Westward nickels with the cool designs on the reverse.

I havent decided yet if the rest are going back to the bank, or if I want to have a small hoard of about $100 in common nickels (counting the rejects and what I had in my change jar). I am leaning towards keeping them for now for speculative purposes, but I will still actively hoard copper cents.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Shows as Currently Out of Stock. Maybe some of us could resupply them. I'd be interested to know if they sell well.

i've gathered together about $100 in face value that is a nice mix of dates and mint marks from 60'-08' in AU-MS condition that I'm holding onto.

I agree with Computer Jones, the Cu3Ni1 nickel's days are numbered. So unless you really need the money keep your nickels. I understand going after the copper pennies are more cost effective, but we should remember that, in addition to copper, the Nickel is our only source of. . . well nickel.

I ended up making the executive decision to keep all of them, and even placed them into nice little bags of 50 each (I was bored). I even raided my girlfriends change jar and took out the nickels she had, and gave her dimes in exchange at equal face value...bwa ha ha ha. I might hit up the local banks for some rolls tomorrow just for fun.

I keep all my nickels & separate out the pre 1960 ones. That being said, I dont actively CRH nickels. I'd rather accumulate $100 of copper pennies or silver halves than tie up $100 in nickels.

But keeping the pre 1960, war nicks, and dumping the rest makes sense too.

If they switch to steel or eliminate nickels, you should have plenty of warning & time to accumulate a huge stash. Copper pennies were dumped 27 years ago, and most people are still finding them at a 25% ratio.
