Hi all-

Most of the usual members know about how I was blathering on about pre-33 gold. What may or may not be known is that I go on ebay almost daily to stay abreast of price variations.

I do have a question, however. I notice that "cleaned" gold coins realize a significantly lower price than non-cleaned coins. I confess I have never physically seen or bought a cleaned gold coin (or if I did someone put one over on me) but has anyone bought or dealt with "cleaned" gold coins?

What do they look like? How can you tell?

I can understand the concept- most of the original luster is gone, etc.etc., but I guess I'm wondering how you can tell the difference between cleaned coins and worn ones.

Any opinions from coin dealer forum members??

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

Cleaning coins is a bad idea, Wags. Here's another thread that's been active the past couple days:

Stick with the gold and don't worry about the numismatic quality. Gold is gold, especially after TSHTF.

Wags,

Simply the only way to tell is study a few coins you not havent been cleaned. Cleaned coins always have a differnt look to them. Normally they are too shiny or an off dull color.

Good advice from both nickel and HR. Cleaned coins have a fake shiny look to them, whether it's silver or gold. Sometimes you will see multiple hairline scratches if they used something abrasive, and you can either see them with the naked eye or under a loupe. I have a couple of cleaned and non cleaned, so I will see if I can get some pics up here for comparison.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Oh, I'd love that!
Guessing from the responses, I don't think I have any cleaned gold. I have 1 coin that I was told had "original luster" and all my other gold coins look the exact same. For what that's worth...

As long as they look pretty similar in the coloring you should be ok. Hold them up the a bright light and turn them in all differnt directions in the light. If it has mint luster the "shinyness/glow" should look the same at all angles. If a coin is cleaned it will look differnt at each differnt angle you hold it at.
