I just wanted to start a thread for all those other hand sorters out there. This is a place to post all those finds that you spend so much time looking for, and when you get discouraged you can just look here and think "Why not me" and then keep on looking. Also if you find an error coin and have a question about it feel free to ask and I'll try to help.

I'll start by posting my finds for the year.

I have found
8 2000 Wide AM pennies worth about $2 each
1 1984 with a major die crack going through Lincolns head
1 1987 S proof penny worth about $4
and my best find so far a 1999 wide AM worth about $300.

Nice! I have a filled die penny, 1972-D, 2000 wide AM, and one 1998 wide AM. If only I knew that the 2008 wide AM existed, thanks for mentioning that. They might be easier to find too.

Edit: Ah, and a clipped planchet, not major

I have a few blank planchets, and a few off center strikes.

Are you throwing that out?

Sorry it was a typo, it is a 2000. I have been trying to do this on my phone (I get internet free for the first month) and it is difficult to post. I think I'm gonna stick to using the computer, because I find it to be much easier.

I got a penny with no date, and a 1980 S, and a 1990 S that looks like it was just taken out of the mint set.

“I got a penny with no date”

A Lincoln cent with no date, is it a filled die error? I don’t remember anyone on the forum having found one of those.

Congratulations.

It was not a filled die, there was just nothing where the date was. I do not know if somebody machined it off or something allthough there was no evidence of any tampering.

Please elaborate on the Brass Cents.
I've found several yellow Pennies and would like to know how I can tell if they are from brass.

Today I found my second 1999 type II wide AM cent. I tried to sell my 1st one to a coin dealer and he said not interested. What are they worth and where can they be sold?

I found 1 more 2000 wide AM,
The 1999 wide am is very rare. The way to tell how much it is worth is to look at the condition. Recently on eBay, one in beat up less than AU condition sold for $80. My local coin dealer said that the one I found that is in AU condition is worth about $300. I will have it professionally graded, if I decide to try to sell it.

The brass cents are 95% copper 5% zinc
The bronze cents are 95% copper 5% tin amd zinc
1864–1942= bronze
1943= zinc coated steel
1944–1946= brass
edit**1946–1962= bronze should be brass not bronze i think.
1962–1982= brass
1982– present= zinc

So that would explain why some of my '62 to '82 Cents would look more yellower than some others of the same vintage?
Different aging/patina?

I've been saving some mid 80's Pennies that look more yellow than others, too. (NOT the gold plated ones you find every now and again.)

Maybe 6 or so 1998 wide americas, and 2 or 3 2000 wide americas....thats it.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

No one here (or anywhere I know off) has found a copper 83. You can dream about it though :)

And if you have one you are rich....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I've bounced so many '83's listening for that Cu ring that I've given up.
I still turn them over to look for doubling, though.

I just hit over 200K on my sorter and my favorite find was a copper blank planchet. I really thought it was a great find, but it appears that many of you have found some of them as well. I put it in my personal coin collection.
