Hello, awhile back I remember seeing a few posts on collecting brass. Couldn't find them so:
I have been thinking about maybe collecting brass, from Thrift Stores, Garage Sales, etc.
1) Is it worth it? 2) How can you tell if something is made of true brass? 3) Are there diffferent grades of brass? 4) How can I find someone who buys scrap brass? 5) Where can I find the going price per pound?
Anything else I need to know?
Thanks ahead of time for anyone who can answer my questions.
I sure appreciate everyone's posts. I've learned alot on ths forum. I have turned into a halves collector/roll hunter because of all the info. Its a drag going thru a $500 box and not finding any, but its like hunting for morel mushrooms- if you don't find any, look in a different place. Perseverance literally pays off!

| The price is down right now, so it might be hard to turn a profit unless you just hoard and wait for the price to rise. I've done this before and still do if I find a bargain. A magnet will help with identity as brass is no magnetic. Also, you can file or cut a small area. Brass will be yellow (or Red) all the way through where plated zinc will be silver inside. Most scrapyards buy brass, so just call around. In better days I was getting up to $1.20 per lb., but it's way down now. Keep an eye out for copper at the same time. I have two pieces in my car now I found at a yard sale for a buck. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| yes i agree with FLbandit, hold on to any of your brass. there is yellow brass which is pure brass and red brass which is brass with copper in or on it. i checked the prices yesterday for around my area and it was only .75 cents, so sit on it for awhile. Call your local recycling center\scrap yard to see what there buy price is. |

| Mixed yellow and red brass was $1.30 pound 4-13-09 at my favorite yard. Yellow brass and red have different quanities of copper. There is also bronze and aluminum bronze which are usually more. Copper tubing is an easy find and pays well. I sell in quanities over 500 lbs usually to get a better price. |

| I called yesterday and was told, $1.20 per lb. I thought it had dropped lower. Went to some yard sales today and got a few copper items for cheap. Gotta love fill-a-bag-for-a-dollar! |

Re collecting brass, do collectors carry a digital scale or the like to thrift stores/garage sales etc to weigh the brass to see if the brass is worth purchasing?
Thanks. |
