Since cheap recreational activities will, IMO, become increasingly important as the economy slides further into oblivion, especially to help us cope with the craziness, what sort of things are you buying that aren't breaking your budget to help you kick back and relax?
The only stuff of mine that I haven't liquidated and in fact I've been adding to are the couple thousand books I have and my music collection (about 400 CDs, mostly Christian metal...and some country, thanks to my girlfriend). I've gotta have books and tunes.

Cards. Rummy, bid whist, hearts, four or five types of poker -- we are card fiends. We splurged and bought some of the good clay chips and now feel like real pros.
Birding is another cheap hobby, and it gets you outdoors, too. Ditto with plant sketching/collecting. You just need a field guide and a journal to get started. Pencils and basic drawing skills if you want to sketch.

| I've kept all my books, not getting rid of any of those. I've also accumulated several decks of cards and a few books on card games. I've also gathered together a bunch of blank journals for writing in. I guess sorting coins could also keep you occupied, but I can't keep an unsorted box in my house for more than a few days so me personally cannot stock up ahead of time. |

I have collected/purchased over the years old board games from the 1960's and 1970's. I typically find them at garage sales or Goodwill, and have sold some on EBay for nice little profits. I have never played any of them, but some of them look like they might be fun.
I also have the old Nintendo and Super Nintendo systems and still enjoy playing some of the games. Online, I have found some games from my childhood like Ms Pac Man, Tempest (my avatar) and so on, and other games that I played on my Commodore 64 growing up. I finally found a good DOS emulator that works on my computer and allows me to play some of those older games. Most of the games are free online, or have a nominal fee, while the Nintendo and Super NES games can be found for a few bucks. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Its nice to see another nintendo guy CoinHunter53562! When I was growing up there was always those sega kids who never quite got it =). I still have my SNES and it is by far a cheap way to keep your family entertained. In my area their quite popular, many wanted or buy ads.
And good call on those advertising notes nats. I fell for one those (old $10 style) about a decade ago. Had me fooled.Currently the chruches in my area have been using them and I took a couple and had fun. Very interesting indeed! |

Lol...yes it is good to know I am not the only here. I love the simplicity of some of the games, and the fact that I can find them at garage sales or at the local Goodwill store for $0.50 to $3. I have to admit, I did upgrade to a PS2 a couple of years ago, but still enjoy the NES/SNES games.
Ok now you got me going...you'll have to tell me what your top 3 favorite SNES games are.... |

Well that kinda puts me behind the 8 ball but I will give it a shot: 1. Super Mario Bros. All Stars (if that isnt cheating) 2. Zelda/Link to the past 3. Either Mario Cart or Super Mario RPG
Theres a quite few of games that I enjoyed, but because these came first, take take president over the others. What your favorties? |

Yeah sorry about that...lol. It's hard to narrow it down to three, but I will try...
1) any of the Contra series games...I think the only one for SNES was "Super C" 2) Soul Blazer...havent played in years but remember spending a decent amount of time on it 3) any of the Super Star Wars games
Believe it or not, I never played Zelda and I am not really sure why not. I think I have it though, and may have to fire it up this weekend if the weather is bad. |

| I listen to a lot of Old Time Radio. You can get a ton of free shows from: ZootRadio.com. The best part is, they are all in the public domain! Another great site for watching old public domain movies and getting public domain audio is the Internet Archive at: archive.org . |
I enjoy taking long walks off short piers. |
