Hi everyone!! I got a 1968 Canadian quarter in change yesterday. I noticed that this year is split; that is some coins are 50% silver and some are .999 nickel. Is there any reliable way of telling what my quarter is? Either way, I come out a winner. More silver, or another .999 nickel coin to add to my small stash.....
If its Ni is will stick to a magnet (including most fridge magnets). If it is 50% silver it will not be attracted to the magnet. Almost as good is to compare to a known silver and known nickel coin. The silver usually looks dull. I saw a coin dealer sorting out silver that way - just picking out the dull ones as silver.
