Some good advice in that link. One takeaway is that just because you have a large safe that you think is too heavy for thieves to take away, think again. If they are working in pairs (or threes) and they took the trouble to break into your house, you can be sure they are going to find a way to either break into your safe and empty the contents, or simply remove it and worry about busting it open off site. You really need to anchor it or if a smaller safe, or hide it very well. |

I have seen people hook a chain to a bolted safe, through the window to a truck, and ripped it right through the wall outside, and was gone.
Another aquantice of mine that has done time for such things said he would also wait or gain acess to under your house, then cut a hole in the floor and come up inside. Said he could sit down and eat dinner while you were gone and never set the alarms off. |

That is another reason to have motion detectors, but then again what good are they if they cut the phone line?
I have thought about people getting under my house. I have 2 doors that go under my house. I need to beef them up. Everything else is brick and is 2-3 bricks thick. There are advantages in living in a house that is over 100 years old. The home inspector said that on some of the beams in the basement that if termites were to eat half of it, it would still meet todays codes.

People don't realize how easy it is to break into a modern aluminum or vinyl sided house these days.
With modern cordless trim saws with carbide blades, I can plunge cut and saw out a section of the exterior siding and sheathing, pry it off, remove the insulation, kick the drywall out of my way and slip between the studs stepping over the Romex wiring right into your living room.
As long as their is no direct view of the activities, the neighbors will just think the home owner is working on a project when they hear the saw running. Or a contractor is doing a job.
Heck with a vinyl sided house, all one would need is a claw hammer and a box cutter. Once you cut the first course of siding, just remove the nails for the rest of them, flex it out of your way or completely remove them, then pry off the sheet of cheesy 7/16" OSB. Remove insulation, kick out drywall, I'm in your living room.
Expensive security doors and bars on windows are not an issue anymore. How ever, a dog would do a good job of thwarting entry once the hole is made...

That's why you set up your system to set off the alarm if the phone line is cut. If my line is cut, the alarm company calls the police.
Hiding in plain site works only to an extent. Sophisticated crooks come with metal detectors and go right for your stash. That is why you never tell anyone what you have. |
Just my two cents! |

A friend recently had his car stolen even though he always left it locked. Apparently there had been a lot more crime in his area so they held a community meeting with the local police.
One of the new schemes for burglars appears to be that they will use lawn service as a cover for breaking and entering. Either doing the B&E during the course of legit lawn companies servicing an area. While all the noise of the lawn mowers, leaf blowers, etc, is going on then the noise of them kicking in doors is covered. Some have gone as far as to be so brazen that they bring along their own lawn equipment/large trailer etc and a few members of the bad gang do the lawn service/act as look-outs while others do the break-in. They have a trailer to thrown their stolen goods inside and then pack up their lawn service equipment to go on to another "job".
Some have even gotten crazy enough to perform these break ins during the course of a severe thunderstorm. Apparently the loud thunder, etc. covers the sound of their breaking down a door. These people are nuts!
On a better note, our local news is reporting that all forms of crime, primarily auto and home burglaries is way down due to the severe cold recently experienced in our area--Central Florida. So, perhaps this trend is being repeated all across the country with the extreme cold weather we have all been having.
Criminals don't mind thunder/electrical storms yet they can't handle cold weather. Go figure!!!

Bluegill,
If you were to cut open the side of someones house i'm fairly certain it would make some noise? But that's pretty sick to think it's that easy to get into a house, then break into the safe. Just need to know who owns one and doesn't have a large dog and i'm set. Oh i also need the saw and the porty torchy.
**also the hot pink design is a must for all you female thieves out there |

As far as safes. Bolted down, welded down, it don't matter when you have one of these.

You must be logged in to see this link.
I served jury duty years ago where the defendant and some of his buddies torched a safe open at a liquour store/check cashing operation. They burned up most of the contents....
Then the guy was stupid enough to get caught with a small duffle bag with remnants of burned cash and checks in it.......months later.......700 miles away......
We gave him a little away time....
