I just found a "gold-plated" JFK, post 70, and read here of others found...what the heck are these anyway? Has anyone had the plating tested? Are these some kind of "Franklin Mint" thing, where granny makes 3 easy payments of $19 a month for 3 months to own this "rare and valuable" coin? Did the kids get into the collection to buy pop with it? Where did they come from? Inquiring minds want to know !

| Not that rare windage. I found more gold plated then proofs. And yes it was a private mint probably ripping Grandma off at one time or another. |

| Pics? I've been looking for those while I grab the 40/90%, but I don't think I've ever seen one. |
As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Here are some on EBay....

The only time I have seen them was a coin collection that my girlfriend's mom's boyfriend had me look at. I'm not a big fan of the Kennedy halves to begin with (unless they are silver!) and I though the gold plating made them even more repulsive. I dont like altered coins so whether it's plated or painted....yuck. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Here's mine... 1971 D. What year did you get, windage?
I'd have to damage it to test the plating. So I'm not testing it as I want to keep it for novelty purposes

Mine is a 1997D and I will have it tested today, cause I am not all that in love with it either. In my territory, another CRH'er marks (an amazing amount) of their dumps with JFK in the space right in front of the face, on the left. This coin was passed on by them. Depending on my mood, I edge sort first, then peek at a few interesting edges. My wife date sorts. I almost missed a 40% that was strangly bright, showing it's copper mix core on the edge, that spooked me away from relying soley on the edge sort method. Different strokes, different speeds. My ratio is way different than oober, 1 gold plated, 15 proofs post 1970 |

A long time ago when I was a kid my mother gave me one. She worked in a doctor's office and it was given to the office as a promotion from a drug company. I think that I still have it kicking around somewhere. It was electroplated 24K gold if I remember correctly, but that was a long time ago to remember what the paper said and I didn't keep the paper. Anyhow, I am sure that they are not worth anything for the gold as it is so thin and only worth something for the novelty.
Maybe I will dig mine out and put it in the for sale section.

| Yep, I found on in circulation as well. I also found a gold plated Susan B. that I guess someone thought was a Sacagawea dollar. Either way, I kept 'em. |
