I was talking to a local teller the other day. They said that they were opening some rolls of halves and there was a large dark colored coin in one of the rolls. Turned out to be a large cent. I believe that they said 1804.
This is why I dump at this bank. They get all of the good stuff.

| did you get it or did they pick it up? that 1804 is worth a pretty penny i think! Thats a nice find. I do not understand why someone would put that in a roll of half dollars instead of trying to sell it |

| I dump there because all of the tellers sort everything. There is one teller there who sorts everything and has the tellers at other branches sorting for her as well. |

Actually, throw a large cent in a coin sorter and it will go into the half dollar bag. If the coin is not checking the electromagnetic signature and the only filter is a magnet, then there is nothing to stop it from going full circle in a freshly wrapped roll of halves waiting to be discovered. |

| I apologize for redirecting the topic a bit, but what coin sorter at what bank sorts halves for you? NONE of the ones near me accept halves! :( |

| In these situations do you figure the tellers are actually sorting while "on the clock"? Must be some pretty laid-back managers at some of those places. |

My local credit union has one that sorts everything from pennies to small dollar coins. I believe it's made by a company called Cummins. I'll be dropping off some zinc today so I'll see if I can find a brand and model number for you. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Defintly on the clock! I thought about being a teller, but the minimum wage pay ,or close to it, makes it so I cant |

| I'm not so sure I would like to be a bank teller. Doesn't sound like much fun at all. People suck, and to deal with unhappy customers all day is no fun. Try working retail first. It would be cool if you had a relaxed atmosphere where you could look through rolls on break, though, but I'm sure the rules are rather strict depending on the branch. |

This is easy for tellers to do in rural areas...my next door neighbor is a part-time teller at my dump bank & she pulled a 2003 ASE out of the deposits for the local Dollar General branch's coin deposits...so someone who thought the big coin was only worth $1.00 & spent it at lost about $17-$20 on that transaction, while my neighbor traded a paper dollar for a nice ASE.
Their pay rates suck though ($8.00 a hour) and lately the part-timers rarely get any hours so I'm not so sure that becoming a teller is the best way to get more to sort. |
