After a couple of years of searching, I finally got a 1909 Lincoln cent. It was my only coin sorting goal I didn't reach in 2008. I did find a 19x9, that someone drilled a hole right thru the 3rd digit. The age and color, and part of the digit lead me to believe it is a 1909, but no one will really ever know for sure.
I have been working on a huge project at work in 2009 and it finally finished. I hadn't had a single day off since January 1, working long hours and every weekend. Not much time for coin sorting. Several people in my office know about my coin sorting operation and I have shared my coin sorting goals with a few of them. The company no longer gives any kind of special awards for special accomplishments due to difficult times. Several people who were the recepients of my project pitched in and got me a 1909 VDB penny in XF condition. I was totally shocked.
I still want to find one in the wild, but this is almost as good.
I'm on the board of directors for a small credit union, and also have shared my coin sorting operation with the credit union president. Back in late 2007 the president handed me a steel 1943 S penny in XF, that he got from a repo car ash tray. This was after I said I hadn't found any of them, but several indians. Since then I have found several steel pennies.
I guess it pays to share your hobby with some people.
