Hi all-

I remember hearing when I was a little guy that if you get a cut or infected wound in the wild with no antibiotics or soap available, it's a good idea to have a dog(or cat, what have you) lick the wound until new blood flows. I guess the logic is that the dog will remove all the germs/pus from the wound, and when new red blood appears, that's a sign that most dirt/dead skin is gone. Dog mouths are supposed to be not just cleaner, but MUCH cleaner than human ones.

Has anyone heard of this tactic?

Dogs' mouths do contain bacteria, they're not sterile, but most of the bacteria are harmless to humans. When they lick their wounds (or yours ), it does clean the area somewhat, but not nearly as much as if you cleaned it yourself with plain water.

I have heard that maggots and leeches are beginning to be used again in medical treatment.

Note: Kind of a gruesome picture on that page. (That you can biggify, if you want. )

Hi there-

Well, I wasn't advocating that hospitals start having dogs roaming through them for random lickings, but only that I remember hearing about that tactic. Maggots and leeches don't bother me- bring 'em if they work!

Oh, no sweat, I didn't interpret your post that you were (although that might cut down on health care costs).

Agh, did you see the picture of that woman's heel? Blaaaagh! But the article said that the maggots were sterilized before they put them on people. How do they do that? Feed 'em antibiotics?
