You know, everybody (when looking for the bottom) seems to conveniently forget we're going to be scrounging for cash to pay our electric bills, get to work, and heat our homes in just 8 months or so. That is sure to bring on another round of foreclosures and frivolous government spending. They also miss out on the fact that we're (bordering on?) socialist now, and that is bad for the economy, permanently. We now have a national debt that is already in default if anyone would admit it.

Instead of wondering when the bottom will be, they should be asking if there is one.

We won't default. We have the Fed's printing press. What we have instead is looming hyperinflation:

When you crawl on your belly, at 4am in the morning to eat what's left of the mulch where your neighbors shrubs used to be, before they ate them, that's when you'll know we've reached bottom.

Hey, anything I can do to spread a little sunshine.

How can you afford sunshine when "hope" and "change" are so expensive??

I was so tickled with myself for that little bit of macabre sentiment that I made it my signature line.

I really need to get a life....

I don't have a TV, Ardent. What am I missing?

It's not what you're missing, but what you've got...

When will we reach bottom?

When the talking heads stop talking about hitting bottom and start talking about how much worse things are getting/going to get (they always overshoot.)

The bottom, my fear as to what it might look like-
-25% unemployment (real life, not the government's models)
-tent cities/ new Hoovervilles in every major city
-steep inflation bordering on hyperinflation as the norm,
-the 'buy today' mentality takes root since it will cost more tomorrow.

-Holders of gold, silver, nickel, copper cents will be the nouveau riche

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

Will The United States of America end up as the New Imperial Rome?

Nothing, nothing at all...

I'll bet I haven't watched more than two hours of TV so far in '09. I'd love to cut the cable, but Comcast won't let you get Internet unless you get TV as well, and FIOS is not an option in my HOOD.

I read a newsletter written last week that quoted shadowstats.com as saying the real unemployment rate is currently 19%....

You might want to have a bottle of bourbon on hand BEFORE you read this.
