Most nations issued silver coins at the beginning of the 20th Century, but nearly all of them had abandoned silver by 1970. Any list is going to be dominated by pre-WWII coinage, while post-1970 silver is going to be confined to bullion issues.
There should be a Wikipedia page about this. |

Hi there-
Somnophore, as long as you pay your own ticket if you visit the USA you can stay at my place, no strings. I can tell you're a clever guy who's just aching to get stuck in the precious metals game but might not have the best resources available in that avenue in the UK (just a guess). : P I'd love to see your face while buying and sorting a $500 box of halves - it's joyous.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

Canada and Mexico (Mexico appearantly today). Also Panama followed the US coin compositions as far as I can tell, so I'm guessing they had silver coins too. Hong Kong (I have one) and China. I've got North Borneo and Sarawak silver coins too. |

If I am not mistaken the UK had silver coinage until the 1960's. I am not sure of the exact year. I think It pre-dates the switch to the new penny from the larger old style copper penny. I know through the 2nd world war british coinage was silver.
I would love to know some more about which countires still had either silver or copper coinage after 1970? Time for some reasearch! |

British coins were .925 until 1920 then .500 until 1947, I'm looking into what currencies like France, Canada USA etc had .800,.835,.900 currency that I might be able to buy at a low premium. |

From a post I made in this topic - now top of the Copper forum: You must be logged in to see this link.
Canadian Pennies up to 1996 are made of 98% Copper.
Canadian and US Nickels are detailed here: You must be logged in to see this link. Save Canadian Nickels up to 1981 as they are Pure Nickel.
Dimes and Quarters up to 1966 are 80% Silver. Dimes and Quarters from 1967 are either 80% Silver or 50% Silver (assume 50% as there is no good way to tell) Dimes and Quarters part way through 1968 are 50% silver Halves and Dollar Coins up to 1967 are 80% Silver
Current melt in US$ is shown at You must be logged in to see this link. for these coins.
Generally anything with a King (mid 50's and earler) is likely worth a little more as a collectable then as bullion.
In the last several years, nickel and zinc got high enough for a while that these coins became worth more then face as bullion:
Pennies from 1997-1999 and some through 2006 are Zinc plated with copper Nickels from 1982-1999 and some through 2006 are CuNi (like US Nickels are) Dimes and Quarters from part way through 1968-1999 and part way through 2000 are Pure Nickel. Silver before-Plated Steel after Halfs from 1968-2000 are pure Nickel Large Voyager and Commemertive Dollars (pre Loonie) from 1968-1986 are Pure Nickel The Mint also issued cased Silver Dollars from 1971-Current to collectors. You will never find these in circulation.
Have fun collecting Canada's interesting and diverse coinage, and enjoy the built in intrinsic value in so many of the coins.
Otherwise, circulated coins after these dates are not worth saving. |

Silver coins of Europe-Part II ITALY 1 LIRA .835 Silver 1901,1902,1905-1907,1908-1910,1912,1913,1915-1917 2 LIRE .835 Silver 1901-1912,1914-1917, 5 LIRE .835 Silver 1936,1937,1938-1941 Rare. few issued
10 LIRE .835 Silver 1926-1934,1936 20 LIRE .800 Silver1927,1928 (forgeries exist for Italian Coins of the 20's & 30's, use care when buying.)
500 LIRE .835 Silver 1958-1970,1980-2001 Commemorative years Date of coin is found on the Rim of the coin. An unusual place to put a date.
ROMANIA 1 LEU .835 Silver 1906,1910-1912,1914 2 LEI .835 Silver 1901,1910-1912,1914 5 LEI .900 Silver 1901,1906
250 LEI .750 Silver 1935 -Weight 13.5 Grams 250 LEI .835 Silver 1939,1940,1941 -Weight 12 Grams 500 LEI .835 Silver 1941 -Weight 25 Grams 500 LEI .700 Silver 1944 -Weight 12 Grams 25000 LEI .700 Silver 1946 -Weight 12.5 Grams 100000 LEI .700 Silver 1946 -Weight 25 Grams
(Interesting how the denomination of the coins went up while the weight of the silver in the coins didn't change all too much. Looks like, in this instance at least, the weight of silver was more valuable than the face value of the coin. 500 LEI .835 Silver 1941 -Weight 25 Grams 100000 LEI .700 Silver 1946 -Weight 25 Grams higher denomination for the same weight of coin AND a little less silver at that.)

Of special note: Keep this nation and this date in mind- Australia 1945
1945 was the Last year Australia minted its coins in Sterling! .925! If you can find any 1945 and earlier Australian coins you are not just buying silver coins, you are buying sterling silver. (These are as much fun to find as 1918 Canadian Coins. You most likely wan't find them in circulation, but if you find sellers who don't know what they are, you will have made the buy of the month.)

I double checked with Google and Yes! Australian coins minted 1945 & earlier are sterling. I read up on foreign coins from 'Collecting World Coins 11th Edition' Krause Publications. My interest is in learning what foreign silver coins are out there and what to look for. Thanks to the book I was able to recognize and buy a few 1944 Australian Coins that other buyers overlooked. |

GERMANY With the establishment of a unified Germany in 1871 under the Kaiser, there were several principalites, free cities, Grand Duchies and the like that struck their own coins in silver and gold.
Since there are so many different coins minted for these Principalities, free cities, etc. (14 pages worth) I will, for the sake pof brevity, post the basic information concerning them- Mint dates: listed in the book 1901-1914 (depending on the different free cities, etc.) silver purity .900 Usually found in 2 MARK, 3 MARK, sometimes 5 MARK, though some preferred to mint a gold 5 Mark coin Gold purity .900 gold

VATICAN CITY
These might not be available for sale as junk silver due to the fact some may consider these coins more religious in nature than as money. Kind of a grey area, more of a collectable/religious/numismatic item than mere silver.

MEXICO
Mexican silver varies in purity n the early part of its history due to the Spaniard Standard of Silver coins. The original 8 Reales or pillar dollar were of a purity of .9025 and the engravers (Mint Master's) initials were stamped onto the coin itself as a way of gauranteeing the purity of the silver.
(A coin dealer told me that the engraver was also the mint master and if the purity of the silver was less than .9025 the engraver was severely punished.)
It seems some mints kept up the practice of .9025 silver while others erred on the side of caution making the silver .903

This trend of less valuable metals and more inexpensive metals is a recurring theme in history. I collect ancient Roman coins, and coins from the early republic are large, beautiful silver coins, while those from middle to late collapse are almost entirely cheaper bronze. |
As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

I just found a 1942 Australian 6 Pence sorting pennies :). I knew it was silver but the look of it, but it is neat to know it is sterling. Thanks!

I've got a Cuban brother in law who fled w/ family as a child from Castro. Saw some barely pre-Castro Cuban coins at a shop & picked some up as gift for brother. Shop owner sold them as 50% silver. Turns out they are 90% silver and minted in Philadelphia at US mint! |
